Barbs are being incredibly annoying. They just refuse to commit suicide by axemen. They are close enough that if I misclick we will lose a city. Fortunately, there are only warriors around so far.

Eastern barbs:

The barbarian warrior was sitting on the hill 1W. I expected it to go on the pigs but instead Lewwyn's scout ventured too close and was slain. Our spear avenged the deed without receiving a scratch. All around a satisfying outcome.

The situation in the west, however, is far from resolved.

As you can see there are two black and one blue barbarian warrior around. Axe and worker are huddling in the city fearful of the brutes. There is a fair chance Gavagai's scout will meet the same fate as Lewwyn's. If the more advanced warrior goes 1NE towards Quaesitum I will have to shift warriors over for a couple turns and some cities will be unhappy.

@Lurkers: As I understand it barbs move last in PBs. So a whipped unit is too late when they are already next to the city. Is that correct?

@Ruff: Gavagai wanted Open Borders. We wouldn't get any trade routes from that. But if he is on the far side of AT as I suspect good relations with Gavagai can be valuable.

Also our effective research rate is at 27% or so after founding of our 7th city. Hopefully, the gold and island city will remedy that.

Barbs move first in PBs. They do that in SP too, which is why you can whip a defensive unit there, too. The main difference is that you don't get to promote units who fought a barb or any other unit in the same turn in a PB.

I could have sworn that I saw a post from you recently saying barbs are last. Maybe I misread it. Barbs going first is how I remembered it too (before reading your post).

That is possible. Sometimes I think faster then I write and make mistakes in my posts. Always assume that I make mistakes.

Here is a boring word of the day ...

centenary

The hundredth anniversary of a significant event; a centennial.

After the good ones above, this is a bit of a let down.

That's nice and all. mischief But I would appreciate feedback regarding Gavagai's offer of Open Borders.

To reiterate: In the short term we would not get any trade routes to Gavagai. However, good relations to Gavagai may be valuable. There is a fairly high chance we have antagonised AT by settling in his direction. And the land near AT continues to be more appealing than the land to the east. So I will likely settle a couple more cities in his face. It would be a logical followup move to invite Gavagai to eat AT together.

Notes: I have never done anything like this and the geostrategic deliberations above may well be total nonsense. I don't even know for sure AT is the one closest to us in the west. That's just implied by the units we met. A scout is being built in Quaesitum to remedy the dearth of information and I will try to squeeze another scouting workboat out of the capital somehow.

OB is fine. He is miles away and OBs with people like that is better than with people that want our land.
