Mission 28: Operation Wolf Prince

Ooh it's a shiny new map type! The debuff you might have noticed is due to a current dark event that makes it easier for enemies to detect us. Gotta be even more careful than usual.

Found some Archons. A pod of three is no joke. I didn't engage yet (snipers on the open is not a good thing). They walked away, but not too far.

After setting everyone up, I went for the Plasma Grenade opener. It hit them for 6-7 damage.

Sunrise and Jkaen were on overwatch, both missed frown

With 3 actions down, all 3 enemies are still alive and very close to us. On top of that, one of our remaining soldiers is a squaddie who won't have a good chance to hit.

Brick picked up the slack and killed one of the Archons with her pistol combo.

David broke concealment to flash bang the last two, then Quagma Blast dropped down the Mimic Beacon. It got blasted twice, but the important part was to survive the first strike.

Now it should be an easy job to finish them off, they are right in our faces. Brian starts us off.. With a miss. Which also sets the car on fire, the car which David is currently using for cover.

After making some distance between David and the car on fire, it was a matter of following the usual combat algorithm.. Start with holo-targeting, save the emergency back-up plan for the end etc.
Quagma Blast picked up the first kill and Sunrise got the second one. We even had moves to spare at the end!

This could have happened during our turn if another batch of stray bullets hit the car. The flames will die down and on our turn we can safely take cover behind it.

A little later, Jkaen spotted MORE Archons. In hindsight, moving to that tile wasn't the safest decision. Jkaen is flanked and needs to move again if we can't kill both Archons this turn.

Brian hit on a 50% and added holo-targeting, then Quagma hit on a 65% and got a crit at 20%!! That's one Archon down. Not bad, newbie!

I'm pretty confident that we can pull this off. I wanted to attack with Jkaen first to increase the odds for everyone else, so it's a very committal move. Worked out though, we killed the last Archon easily.

We've got aerial support!

Battle Scanner spotted a turret and a Sectopod-pod.

One Grenade later, the turret is no more.

Some fools patrolled into us, our overwatches killed their Elite Commander.

Brian shredded all the armor from the Heavy MEC. It's going down for sure, though the Heavy Lancer actually has cover.

We still had over 50%+ against the Lancer though, so we killed both. Heavy MEC dropped some loot. We want to pick it up, but might draw the Sectopod with that move, so gotta be careful here.

David can move even further now with the GTS tactic. His PCS gives him +4 movement. We picked up the loot: Two advanced weapon upgrades and an Advanced Agility PCS.

A little bit later, the Sectopod patrols into our full overwatch barrage.

The ambush was a great success.

Brick finished it off with a pistol shot.

The Lancer was harder to kill, it was hiding inside the aircraft. With this many shots though, it was only a matter of time.

Mission complete. An easy one for sure, but that's probably a good thing after a break from playing.

Sunrise and Quagma Blast earned promotions.

Sunrise unlocked his hidden ability... Blast Padding. Getting that as your LAST perk.. Hah!
For his actual promotion, he got Capacitor Discharge, which seems to be an AoE Combat Protocol. What can I say, I love my guaranteed damage.
That said, since Sunrise has reached the highest rank available, he will (probably) go to temporary retirement until end game missions.
Quagma Blast received Long Watch. He will go down the long range sniper path. Just in case something happens to Old Harry. Saying that out loud won't jinx it, right?!

Here's some of the loot. We were actually down to 1 Elerium Core, so the supply raid came in at a good time.

Great to see the team back in action!

Nice to see this one again, and a flawless mission as well. Very nice. thumbsup

It's a thrilling race: Which campaign will finish first, this or the Long War one?

At current pace, most definitely not this lol

Base Management:

Started building the Serpent Suit, got some supplies from the supply drop, then headed out for a mission:

We're assaulting the ADVENT Forge! It's the Blacksite mission we chickened out from earlier.

Outfitted our Acolyte Mardoc for his first mission. I think the weapon used to be Rho's. Not like it's cursed. shifty

I also bought Advanced Psi Amps for him to boost his attacks.

RefSteel got a +4 HP PCS to keep her alive. We have a dodge one left, I had some plans for it before the break..

Interestingly the mission is only ranked "Difficult". Might not be as much of a bloodbath as the first Blacksite.

Mission 29: Operation Cosmic Skull Part 1

Cinematic shot of Mardoc and his totes-not-cursed weapon.

We started on a cliff and took defensive positions on the edge. There is no timer, so we can afford to wait.

First they walked into sight, then next turn right into our ambush!

We landed all our shots, but didn't start shredding the armor until the third hit. Having our shredders at the front is something to keep in mind for the future.
Anyway, we killed the thing, but it revived to full health as we've seen before. Brian Shanahan managed to 1-shot the snake in the back! And now it's our turn.. Or is it?

The Andromedon gets a second turn, probably because of the revival. It rushes down Brick and tries to melee her, but misses.

Taking it out was no problem. I moved our guys out of the way in case it explodes.

We jumped down and started advancing towards the Forge. Located a pod on the way.

Enemies were one tile too far apart to get em all with the nade, even with our upgraded radius. Some things never change.

RefSteel had a clear shot on the Lancer and took it out.

Jkaen fired at the Archon on a 67%, it dodged but took some damage anyway. Brick finished the job with a 79% shot.

Just one enemy left, but doesn't look like we can kill it.

Okay, a crit might do it  shades

No more enemies near us. There's a bridge ahead (well two, actually, but we'll just stay on this side).

It would be bad to get pinned down in a small area with little cover. Let's throw a Battle Scanner on the other side to see if it's clear.

Oh yeah, all clear.

Well. That's what I thought at the time. On a closer look at the screen shot 3 months later.. Highly not clear.

So next turn, I sent David over the bridge with a blue move, to be extra sure that we can all get there safely without getting into a fight.

Not today friend, not today.. BRING. HIM. HOME.

Acid Bomb shreds 4, deals 1.

EMP Bombs are amazing!

Brick was way too far for pistol spam.. But still deals 13 damage with her sniper rifle.

It's all up to you now buddy!

Mission 29: Operation Cosmic Skull Part 2

Wasn't even worried.

A new threat appears the following turn. Note that the MEC gets to go on Overwatch on his patrol turn.

A wrist rocket launcher takes care of that. We managed to kill both of em without trouble.

We've moved everyone over the bridge. We know that there's a pod just inside the building, but they haven't patrolled into our ambush.
Not sure what caused all the damage btw. I think it's from the Sectopod patrolling around, taking down walls on its way, cause there was shit broken even before we got vision on it.

They did not see us when I moved David next to the building, nor did they see us when I moved Mardoc to the other corner.

When I started making what I thought were safe moves, it's Brick who gets spotted. Full cover vs half cover, ugh.
We're in a horrible spot, this is going to get tricky.

Jkaen took a low roll at the Andromedon and missed. David had a nice shot at the Lancer by the window, but he missed as well.

Time to go on the defensive. I had Brian Shanahan use suppressive fire on the Andromedon to force it to move next turn.
Mardoc threw down a Mimic Beacon away from us (bottom left corner) and everyone who still had an action went into overwatch.

The Andromedon ran out and we damaged him down to 30% HP. It attacked the Mimic Beacon but did not manage to kill it. Now it'll get to draw more shots away from us.

NOPE! The Lancer straight up ignores the Mimic Beacon and attacks Mardoc, taking him down to 3 HP and stunning him.

The other one goes for a shot at RefSteel through the window, but misses.

Okay, at least no-one died. Jkaen can kill the first phase of the Andromedon 50% of the time. Unfortunately the Lancer is in invincible cover.

Rolled low on damage, but Brick finished the job. She even got a crit, which would have been enough to kill it before the grenade.
Let's hope we have enough juice left in the tank to clear everything.

Now let's set up the AoE with Lightning Hands. She rolls high damage and outright kills the Lancer.

Instead of AoE, Brick used a normal pistol shot on the Andromedon and got a crit for 12 damage. With a pistol! Jkaen then finished it off.

We could kill the last guy, but I'm scared of spotting a new pod if we peek inside. So instead, RefSteel healed Mardoc back up to 11 HP and the rest overwatched.

The Trooper switched positions. He only triggered one of our overwatches, and that one missed. He got to take a shot at our MVP of the mission, but he also missed.

In the end he died on a miss from Brian Shanahan. Gotta love that weapon attachment, makes up for our shit aim.

We scanned the place and found nothing, but we still heard enemies out there. Turns out they were on the roof. When we spotted them, they climbed down into the building.

A cutscene played. The aliens are growing ADVENT in those pods on the walls. I think we were in one of those right at the start of the game. Hmm.

We could only see this guy. There was not much cover to be had, I could only move a few soldiers up.
Mardoc ended up throwing a flash bang in the fog, hoping to get them all. I think it only worked against the one we had vision on.
RefSteel used Aid Protocol on Mardoc to buff his defense, since he's the one in the front.

Two of them shot at Mardoc and missed, which they damn better do when he's in full cover with +40 extra defense from a drone. The third one chose to overwatch.

David jumped down from the roof where he had triggered the pod. He had a 50% shot at the OW guy.. but I opted to make sure it's removed and went with the flash bang.

Mardoc changed spots to free up his cover, then 1-shot one of the troopers with a critical hit.

Jkaen and Brian Shanahan took coin flips on one of em, the second one was a hit and a kill.

Apparently a flash bang and full cover isn't enough. Mardoc getting pounded on his first mission.

Next turn, we started off by healing Mardoc and then missing our attacks twice.

The third one got dodged, but we managed to break down the wall he was using for cover. I let Mardoc get the kill for revenge.

Got some loot too. Advanced Hair Trigger and a PCS: Superior Speed.

I sent David in alone for the objective. The others are hanging out by the door, ready to be extracted.

"I could be at home reading the newspaper and having a coffee" coffee

Change of plans, we have to go through the building and to the other side. WHY CENTRAL WHY?
Oh and the aliens are sending reinforcements to that side.

We set up an ambush inside the objective room. We kept hearing em outside, but they never came in.

Have it your way aliens, we'll come out and fight you. Wait, we still don't see em. Are they going AROUND?

Yep, they're going around. We'll just get the hell outta here. Ninja strats.

Bye bye! Mardoc was wounded and will be out of action for 11 days.

Brick was the only one to rank up. A sniper with Run & Gun? YES PLEASE!  Heysexy
As her actual final ability, I gave her Fan Fire, which makes her attack someone three times with a pistol.
Brick will be a semi-retiree now.. For a little while. We're nearing the end, I'm not sure how many "easy" missions we have left. But if we have some, we'll train up the other soldiers.

Wild guess: It's just how they make the Avatars. Though I might be mixing up the storylines. We'll find out soon enough.
We also got a few hundred supplies and reduced the progress of the Avatar Project by two pips.
If we get it down to zero, the aliens should just give up and go home.

Nice mission.

It really boggles my mind why Advent/the Aliens think it's a good idea to deploy Sectopods at important Facility locations given their propensity for just walking through walls. I had one Facility assault where the Sectopod and Gatekeeper had dealt so much damage to the building it kind of seemed a waste of the X4 charges!

Also, Archon armour needs to go on a long-range Sniper since the jump function doesn't count as a move.

Looking forward to the next mission ... in a couple of months' time?

Hey! We're back in action! I mean, at least briefly, but it's something! I forgot how fun it was to just stand around pointing at people, letting my drone do all the work of healing and aiding and whatever while I shoot at bug-eyed aliens.

Also, I'm with Dreylin. With all the Sectopods and Andromedons and whatever they have running around, and the level of respect they show for the walls of their own facilities, I'm surprised there's a single building left standing in the Advent cities!
