By making too many assumptions. Here's the demographics screen for the most recent turn:
Here are the settling possibilities. I've marked with "0" those spots on which a player could settle on turn 0, and I've marked with "1" the spots that can be settled on turn 1. I've left off some spots that I think are unlikely (Assumption #1).
If every island has the same land mass (Assumption #2), then all of the turn 0 cities get either 7000 or 8000 land points. I can tell from the "Rival Worst" statistic in the demos screen that Leolo settled a spot with 4 land tiles. This seems very strange to me if we all have a similarly shaped island, so I'm going to assume (#3) that Aristobulus settled a spot with 5 land tiles. Ok. Now the math.
From the demos, we know that the rival land average is 7117. There are 17 rivals, so the total number of rival land tiles is (7117)*(17)=120989, which I'll call 121000. We know that the rival best land is 8000. We know that the rival worst land is 4000. So there are 15 rivals with a total land number of 109000. (121000-8000-4000) From Assumption #3, I'm assuming that Aristobulus has 5000 land tiles. So there are 14 rivals with a total land number of 104000. I assume (Assumption #2) that everyone left has either 7000 or 8000 tiles.
(And now I'm getting rid of these silly big numbers, in favor of the number of tiles. So instead of a total land score of 104000, let's just say everyone has 104 tiles.) If everyone has either 7 or 8 land tiles, we can express that as 7x+8y=104, where X is the number of people with 7 tiles and Y is the number of people with 8 tiles. We know that x+y=14, because that's the total number of titles. Y=14-X. We can substitute in the first equation: 7x + 8(14-x)=104. Or: 112-x=104. X=8. Y=6. So, if all my assumptions are true (unlikely) and I haven't missed something (unbelievable), there are 8 people with 7 tiles in their territory and 6 people with 8 tiles. If everyone has the same island shape, then those 6 people settled in place and those 8 people moved on turn 0. I'm sure I'm completely wrong. Anyway, it doesn't help me.

Are you in my head? This is exactly the plan. Over at Civforum, Lord of the Civ asked me how I'd build the galley without Bronze Working. I half-jokingly said "slowly." The plan is to grow to 4 and then use the Imp bonus to work what will amount to several 4foodhammer tiles. The thorn in my side is that I waste like a dozen worker turns. (Not a total waste because I road some forests, so I get like 3 of those back moving into forests later.) We go Fishing first because if we go Hunting first, we can't start a work boat the moment the worker completes. I'm still not thrilled about the plan, but I do think it can get some stuff done with it.

Nauf, what are the tech costs for the ancient era techs?
And to answer your question, if you believe there is a single right answer to the first 50 turns, shouldn't anyone be able to figure it out given time? In other words, yes, we all know what you are thinking. It's not like you have many options here.

thanks for the math, I get your point but doubt that this number is useful regarding all those assumptions
Quote: then all of the turn 0 cities get either 7000 or 8000 land points
well, the one in the lower right has only 4 tiles... although I consider this place as "unlikely".
There are only very few "logical" places, so it's at least kinda interesting brain-jogging

Ask and you shall receive a week later:
That's actually the screen from turn 5, and I was lazy about putting it up. It's now turn 7, and I've completed Fishing. A few other people also got techs:
I was prepared to do more math for klops, but it's actually very straight forward. From turn 6 to turn 7, rival average power went from 7117 to 7705, representing a global power increase of 10,000. This means that every other player in the picture above took Hunting. I am unique in going for Fishing first. It's interesting that Piccadilly and Teerohr went Hunting first, when they had no other food tech. I would guess this means that they have deer instead of the wheat like me.

I was off last week so I could have crunched a few numbers for you, alas I am back at work and have little free time.
How horrible are city costs on small/deity? Is a crappy little city that shares one food and needs a border pop for unique food and limited commerce really worth it for anything other than a way to scrabble for commerce or a GS bulb (using double or triple whipped lib for a border pop?

In the grand scheme? I'm not sure. Hopefully I'll not have to settle a second city on the capital island until it can grow cottages for the capital. In my sim, the first two cities after the capital are profitable due to overseas trade. I really don't have a feel for deity costs, but I'm optimistic that this map will be balanced to make it playable.
I've been very bad about taking screenshots, so this demos screen from the previous turn is the best image I have of the land after border pops:
It looks like the Northwest and Southeast are inaccessible pre-Astro. So I'd guess that the players are arranged with neutral islands between them. I haven't looked at tech costs for later techs in a while, but I believe two Scientists are more than enough to research all of Astro.

On turn 8, some more people got some more points.
Um, idk. Let's say everybody without Mining researched Mining, and the person (people?) without it researched Hunting. It's complicated by vanguard growing to size 2. If he grew to size 2, he could have completed a warrior this turn (2000 soldier points), which would disguise somebody's tech choice. Not sure why he grew to size 2. He is not a novice, but I get the sense that he's been playing a lot more of Civforum's BASE mod than BtS.
These early turns are what we in the Civilization reporting business refer to as a "content drought." So, since I appreciated Vanrober introducing me to Silvia Perez Cruz and Mjmd throwing out shanty recommendations, have a folksy female singer-songwriter. Hopefully the embeded video starts at the 2:05 mark. Pseudo-edit: It does not. You must skip manually.

Glad some part of my posts are appreciated (which is a good reason to put the song in). I liked this. Pro tip though is to put the song first in the post, so people can listen and read at same time.

Nice voice, but what a contrast to my first concert for two years(?), we had yesterday (and some replay this morning):
Rammstein cover band "Völkerball" :D
lets try timecodes...
seems like the quick insert doesn't work but you can use the "embed" code manually
Code: [embed]https://youtu.be/9R4bXMKIWjg?t=129[/embed]

Hmm. Klops my browser throws a fit and won't display your link when embedded that way. Oh well.
I'll take Mjmd's advice and put the song here first, but that means I need four minutes of content. A tall order.
I debated putting a different folksy artist, who had slightly shorter songs, but I figured that would give us musical whiplash. Perhaps people know the band The Sundays, so they'll be more willing to click on a cover video. Enjoy.
In Pitboss 90, very little has happened. This turn there was a tiny bit of micromanagement finesse:
Even though working the furs would cut our research time on Sailing down a turn, we keep working the forested wheat. We'll switch to the furs next turn and still complete Sailing by the end of turn 23. Working the forested wheat enables us to grow earlier and produce a slightly faster settler.
Honestly, I've been pretty bored, so I haven't been keeping track of the demos. A large subset of the players grew the turn before me. Maybe this is because of an EXP bonus; maybe it's because they have access to a faster Animal Husbandry resource. No use crying about it. Top food also went from 10 to 12 this turn. My Crop Yield is 9. No one has a size 3 capitol so this is just somebody who could improve a second food resource a minimum of ten turns before I could improve mine. (No use crying about it.)
That's about a minute of reading. Hmm. More complaints? No, no. Have to save them up. Oh I know! I can tell you about how Maggie Rogers got her start. She was a university student when Pharrell (famed music producer of "Happy" amongst many others) was giving a masterclass. There's a delightful video of him listening to some of Rogers' music portfolio and being blown away by it. The video went viral, and from there, her star was ascendant. If she has a bad song, I haven't heard it.
