Part if the challenge is timing major posts rather than what is found in a discussion.
For example the old diplo PB games included chat logs and no one reads those, but quick discussions in threads can be. Only get read once or twice though. Major summaries and updates can generate discussion but have to be timed with viewer and participants availability.
Good content always gets the views. People like maps and arrows.

I was thinking about the Minas Geraes. Brazil go for culture and Norway focus on science. Norway gifts coal to Brazil and you have battleships way before anyone else.
But that’s still very late in the game, so there are probably better early alternatives.

Another guess would be Mapuche. Vikings can weaken the units, Mapuche kills them and you have a very sad opponent. Not sure how practical that is, though. Also has a bonus if gifting cities is allowed.
Byzantium and going for 2 religions? That would be a +6 bonus for Byz units, not too bad. Also has early naval UU.
