Tech trading enabled at Paper, map trading enabled at Writing, so it would occur at different points of the game. Even if you then say "But why not change it to tech trading enabling the known tech bonus, like it used to in previous versions of the mod?" the answer is that change also requires DLL work anyway.

At least one of my friends is in, so we're officially in.
I haven't really been following the rules/settings discussion at all and don't have a strong preference. However, I would voice a preference for as few as possible "extra" rules as my friends who I'm getting to play with me are new to Civ. (February 27th, 2014, 13:43)novice Wrote: Just ban map trading? You're suggesting a human resources solution to a technical problem! Er, no, wait, you have it right. We're trying to impose a technical solution on a human resources problem! I think the idea is to just do it if we can because it makes the mod better and more complete? But if it's one of those 1% type of problems that requires a lot more than 1% effort to solve, it may not be worth the trouble when we can, indeed, just agree to not trade maps. Played: Pitboss 18 - Kublai Khan of Germany Somalia | Pitboss 11 - De Gaulle of Byzantium | Pitboss 8 - Churchill of Portugal | PB7 - Mao of Native America | PBEM29 Greens - Mao of Babylon
It does require two people making the same mistake at the same time, and one of those people being advanced enough to have paper. Oh, right, advanced enough to have writing. Yeah, you're probably right.
Yeah...personally, I am fine with stating as a rule that there will be no map trades. That is useful to do anyway, so everyone on board with it. But without the code to back it up, just one small mistake fucks up everything. As the quote goes, "What has been seen, cannot be unseen". There are so many players that it's much more likely to occur than in a small 5 player PBEM.
Why are we banning map trading?
Edit: to clarify, I ask this because I don't see it in the proposed settings. I don't want to start a vote or anything like that.
Well, I originally floated the idea of the huge 30+ player game and no map trading was one of the main ways to make it more manageable for peoples PCs, and it helps limit information overload for players.
It's not critical it be disabled from a technical point of view, but when I was designing the game it seemed like a good rule to not lead to a similar burn out to that seen in PB3, (although that was diplo lead, and PB13 seems to have gone well, this game has double the players so checking F4 techs, resources, diplomacy screens etc can become a chore). |
