[Spoiler] Desperados: The Black Sword & Agent

I sent a haphazard force deeper into Old Roman territory, where all of Adrien's units had fully healed up. I think a wise plan would've been to send a single suicide unit to scout what he had, or wait until all my forces linked up into one huge army. Instead, my forces got wiped out entirely even though there were a lot of maces to crush his praets. I severely underestimated the power of catapults here. I thought a few Charge promotions would soften the blow a bit, but nah. Chalk up another lesson learned.

With Engineering I can pull up units pronto, so I already have an even bigger army ready now. This time I am positioned in forest for defensive advantage, and he has fewer catapults. He has to engage me there, or move his units onto open territory to move into my lands further. I also had 2 bits of encouraging news:
First, I captured this island colony here. There was only an axe defending, no problem for the uber swordsmen. No infrastructure remaining, but I chose to keep the city (and poach a worker). Taking a gamble that he doesn't have the forces to retake it just out of view.

Second, I checked out this Roman city on a hunch that being in his backlines, it'd be underdefended-- a single spear! Couldn't hold it of course, but razing a pop 10 city near the core has to suck. I'll let the Maces dawdle along pillaging stuff until he clears them out.

I offered him peace this turn. In the pitched battles, he has come out on top, but he's lost 4 cities, I'm blockading his core, and so far this war has just dragged both of us down.

Techwise.. I grabbed Alphabet, am clearing out the religious branch to get Feudalism. Can't believe I went this far in the game without even Mysticism.
One horrid disaster: With Engineering, I can no longer build Impis!!!! frown

I just had a really nasty idea, to try and settle that tiny blot of an island with 2 peaks on it, that'll block off Rome's ability to resettle the spot I just razed......

Doesn't work that way. bodies of land that are not connected do not affect the minimum distance rule.

But the spot is okay regardless - that is two seafood you get from it, and "can only be taken by seaborne assault"- attribute.

However, if you were to pop borders and have that tile which was the former city within your culture...it couldn't be settled by anyone except yourself.

Do civs reclaim culture if the settle on a razed spot? Like, I know if I had captured the city and he retook it, he immediately gets his full 2nd ring borders back. If he resettles does lingering Roman culture on the coast tiles pop up too?

All tiles store the culture that has accumulated in them for the entire game. The only way to remove that culture is to remove the civ that produced said culture form the game.

ie, if Rome resettles that city, and then pops borders at 10 culture, the newly popped borders will claim tiles that have a majority of Roman culture because of the culture that was put into the tiles by the previous city. The cities are actually irrelevant inasmuch that they simply need to have tiles within the reach of their borders to essentially claim them.

For example, if you planted on the island and popped borders to claim the former city site, Rome could still plant on the plains hill two tiles south of your new city.

This is because the minimum distance rule doesn't apply because of separate landmasses, and even though you will have popped borders, the plains hill will remain under Roman control due to the culture put into that tiles by the razed city, and that plains hill is still claimed by the Roman city between the dye and banana that has popped borders to 40% and thus the plains hill is still within Roman borders.

Understand?

Understood, sensei.

No peace.
Is his plan to keep up the attrition until CH declares war on me again?

Rome drew its army along the blue arrow. I think his tactic is to use his workers to immediately road the red dot, so his army can bear down on my stack in force without having to stop within range of my catapults.
I don't see a better move than just staying put, on the defensive terrain. If I retreat out of it then I just give it to him as a better spot to stage an attack on Red Blood.

Elum cancelled OB, he's in Mercantalism so it does him no good.
Offered OB to ipecac/The Network. Hope he's not spooked by all the naval action going on right off his borders.
