Turn 124
Ah ha ha ha. No, I want Forest Green back!
Although Azza seems to have guilds, so that might be difficult...
His main stack NE of Barnet is
6 mace
4 keshik
1 pike
8 spear
6 axe
28 cats
and just behind is another two cats and two spears
My stack is
10 mace
8 axe
4 spears
3 pikes
7 crossbow
14 cats
with 13 horse archers in reserve
If he attacks with all his cats, then takes good-odds battles (ie doesn't use spears) I think it'll come out something like this (I haven't taken promos into account as I'm lazy). (By the way Noble - thanks for the worldbuilder tip - that saved me ages )
Simming an attack by me I think I want to cat down his maces until I get 80%+ odds with mine, then kill them, then kill his Keshiks, then kill as many cats as possible with crossbows and axes, use the rest of my cats to try and get some collatoral on his spears, then use the reserve horse archers to try and mop up the remaining cats with flanking...
Giving it another go I put all my cats in first and then sent in everything else. I lost 26 battles (including the cats) but killed 29 of his units and I think left his stack in worse shape. The trouble is that he can just move back and get reinforced by cs_office.
I logged in and realised most of the promotions are in my favour. So I thought we might as well have some fun! I promoted 9 of my cats to barrage.
My first seven cats give my mace 90% odds, so I'll take a few battles to reduce the pool further for cat collatoral to hit the spears (I really want to get a great general in play too to get some shock horse archers)
But after a couple of attacks the odds drop to 80%, and when I check out the cat again I see it'll fight the pike
(only hit it twice though )
Brilliantly another cat suicide and two mace attacks gets me my great general in Barnet (I still don't understand how it decides where the GG will spawn, but this is absolutely ideal) I only need 2xp on my eight horse archers to get shock, so I'll add a spear and a cat for the free upgrade and barrage.
I used the rest of my maces at 90% odds, then I've got clear shots at his cats. I get three kills with crossbows then have a choice, 70% with an axe, 60% with a barrage cat, or 60% (7% retreat) with a horse archer against the pike. I'd like to know what shape the spears are in, so I try one HA who wins but the odds on the next spear are 46% (10% retreat).
So maybe a few axes to reduce the numbers of cats before sending in my last four cats in the hope they'll hit spears. Seven axes kill four of his cats. Then my first cat reduces the spear average strength from 3.35 to 3.25, the second to 3.07, the third to 2.96 and the fourth didn't hit.
So the horse archer now gets 52% (9% retreat) and wins. And I hadn't realised the top spear had combat 1 - now the odds are 68% (6%) and all but one of the HAs win. Unfortunately only two cats get killed by flanking though.
The remaining city garrison crossbows can clean up a few more cats (and we get a great general in Halifax!)
Oh, and I'd forgotten about the non-shock horse archers, who are getting 85% odds.
And kill eight cats by flanking!
At this point my remaining pikes and spears clean up (the last two had to come from Ipswich, but I don't think Azza has anything that can hit that city this turn.)
So my attention turns to cs_office. I wonder how much stuff Azza can get in there next turn - should I heal up my stack or just go straight for it? After that I wonder how easy de_tuscan and de_inferno will be to hit? Azza has knights and a few catapults, but I've got a decent stack still...
Up north this Keshik just killed an unprotected worker. I have a spear who isn't very happy about the lack of sportsmanship and wins the 70% battle. I'm also thinking I'll settle the great general in Halifax, which is going to be my globe city and will pump out 2xp units for the rest of the game once I have nationhood.
In the west Azza has one mace approaching oldham. I only have a spear in the city, so I'll whip an archer and upgrade it to a crossbow next turn, then use my horse archer and the crossbow to drive him out. I also need to get some units back up here to stop Hydra thinking it's easy pickings.
I can't wait to see this graph next turn...
Looking back at my first screenshot it looks like this turn took me six hours to play! Okay some friends came around and I had some dinner too, but this is by far the longest turn I've played so far... Who's done better? Modern warfare on a big map? As they say on B3TA, apologies for the length.
