He shouldn't have done that, and there really shouldn't have been lurkers cheering him on to do it.
Just catching up on that part of the world. Superdeath nukes his natural ally .
That's a tough spot for Commodore. You can't even play for revenge with TBS in the middle.
Is this map going to be a powder keg with mobile opportunists winning the prize? Or are we going to see conservative plays to manage threats from all sides with an Astronomy race? This is a really great map if the unbalancing missteps don't end the game early.

....skulls for the skull throne
It's been pretty standard for years (ever?) here that even the most idiotic/bold invasion scheme gets cheered on from the peanut gallery for the mere chance of blud. It was superdeaths call, and his alone, in the end to go for it.
Can't you just enjoy this sort of game for the wacky fractal zaniness of it? After all that's what these awesome big games are for right, if we wanted a "balanced" game half the people wouldn't be in here...

The great thing is, it can be both! Map is so huge that all kinds of things can and will happen, and I expect great things for opportunism and also from whoever manages to hit Astro with a solid base to work from. The only thing I don't expect to see is a conquest victory. Conquering will be important for the contenders to get into a position where they can win by culture or space and to inhibit the other contenders, but it won't literally be a conquest victory.

It's one thing when a veteran jokingly asks 'should I do it', and another when it's a newbie who doesn't know what he's doing. In many instances it's better for lurkers not to say anything.

This is besides the point. I do enjoy unbalancedness such as pindicator neighbouring Commodore again, or the 'peninsula of death'. Lurkers cheering on a newbie to wreck his and his natural ally's games for no good reason at all is something else entirely.

If you want to know how to smartly make aggressive city plants and avoid getting punished for it, watch what OH/Fintourist are doing by backing up their cities with very strong defense. A+ execution.
(Hopefully I'm not jinxing them.)

Agree. Top notch execution. They look to have already won the mental battle with William as he's looking ready to go back to the sandbox despite being Toku. OT4E and company are a bit torn on response but seem more likely to land on waiting for HBR.

If OT4E does declare on t61, it's going to be a two-front war

I have to admit that I'm struggling to understand OH's neighbours' responses:

#1: Harry does not win.
#2 (Secondary): Survive to the end with a respectable empire.
So I'm trying to be a serious thorn in his side right now, without totally trashing my economy. That would just allow me to be conquered in 50-ish turns anyway. But this is an always-war game for me, and a meta-goal is to make all of you dear readers think twice about planting something that aggressive against me in my next PB game if we are loving neighbours.
Personally, I wouldn't like Harry's plant due to what that would mean for my other, future, city plants. But that doesn't appear to be a factor in William's mind. The city is 7-7 tiles away from each capital, so nobody would love it but to trash your economy and declare always-war seems a little over the top.
For OT4E,...Hippo is 6 tiles from their capital while Elite is 5 tiles south of Harry's capital. Hippo is also nicely on a hill with both mountain barrier and mountain visibility; only 1 way in. OT4E hasn't said anything about the marble so if they win the sheep, I'm not so sure what makes them upset enough to trash their economy with 5 axes + 1 spear. If Old Harry is able to handle this aggression it'll be strictly because of his northern safe zone which neither William nor OT4E known about. If Harry had a 3rd neighbor with these types of tendencies he'd be really screwed.
I get that everybody is seeing Old Harry's rapid takeoff as scary but Elkad has been identified as a weaker player and is sitting at the bottom of the scoreboard so there's definitely an opportunity cost there. OT4E's 5 axes + 1 spear into settlers is enough to make up the city count advantage that Harry currently has.
