It is just for monitoring the game progress.

Hmm? That's a pretty hard task (difficult to really evaluate and those two options can play out very differently). In principle I would prefer that everyone has as equal space and equal land quality as reasonably possibly, but I know that we go here with a pretty random setup and map makers free time will determine the amount of balancing.

Commodore, the sequence is following, right?
1. Map is created with 33 starting locations (+ lurker civ)
2. Players are paired with leaders/civs (using some nice method)
3. Players are randomly placed to different locations (you can organize a nice streamed lottery so that we can laugh at your early predictions afterwards..)
--> meaning players don't see their starts before civs+leaders are locked and there won't be any placing because of any preferences (apart from putting Krill & Plako together on a 20-tile island that is isolated until Astronomy) mischief

What did you mean with trading civ+leader pairings? I think it could be a total mess if players are allowed to interact with each other before the game and trade their rolls. As already stated, I liked the PB13 method, but I'm open to some other interesting variants, snake pick does not belong to them though lol

Monitoring/admin purpouses as plako said, but I'm also crossing my fingers for awesome reports by Sullla.

I like Commodore's picking method of rolling a single combo and allowing for a day or two of swaps. Since plako stated that changes will only happen if most players agree, I'd like to hear if anyone else is in favour of Commodore's proposal. The alternative is 3 rounds of random rolls as per plako's post. I don't think there'd be much of a mess, just a bit of frantic haggling smile And I think this would be the perfect setup to try out that kind of system.

Sullla could do what I had in mind for PB13. After the game, create a video about the history of that world. The wars, the alliances, the important events etc. With in-game and real time date counters visible. I think it could be an epic video, and could even go viral if we wanted to share it with the "outside world" to create more interest in PB's (though we might not actually want that). It'd work much better with an observer who could take screenshots always in the best quality and the same resolution, with everything visible. Anyway, doesn't have anything to do with the actual game, but thought I'd share the idea.

Points to Commodore for gripping hand reference.

Is the lurker civ being civ 34 based on a limit in the mod? Could it instead repeat a civ and therefore be the 35th civ?

Or even create an ongoing video series with a running commentary. I think that'll be far more interesting than a post-game summary, as a lot of hindsight would inevitably sneak into such a video.

I think Sullla is quite good at minimizing the effect of hindsight on his writing.

I don't think that's a good idea — 33 more-or-less identical patches of ground, more-or-less identically sized I think goes against the whole spirit of this venture. Something similar is already in play, PB17, and I don't like it for this event. Besides, if you try to make it more-or-less identical for 33 civs, it would have to be snaky as fuck to ensure a more-or-less equal proportion of water tiles within everybody's "zone of natural expansion". I am thus very strongly for Commodore's suggestion, maybe even with an amendment that we also have a choice of coast/land bias in addition to pole+wide/equator+tight bias. Coasts are just no fun to play without Fin, and vice versa if you roll Vicky of Portugal you rather want to have lots of them. Actually, just the fact that someone WILL be Portugal is probably enough to let that person know whether he has reasonable sea access or not, as he could well end up playing with no UB and UU for practical purposes, to pile onto no initial starting tech.

Should probably edit out the PB17 spoiler. Just in case some haven't figured out the map layout yet.
