Sid Meier explains Slavery...

Shouldn't something be useful for "standard settings" also? I mean, both in multiplayer here and in single-game CFC games late era start games are extremely rare. I think that the new possibilities they offer are unfairly overlooked, but that's what we have now.

And to be fair, even BTS Cossack are definitely not useless!

CIV was never designed just for one subset of gamers, so...no, it shouldn't be.

Fair enough.

Cossacks were pretty obviously OP in vanilla even to someone who was just playing SP at Monarch level at the time.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

The only reason Serfdom is considered "useless" is simply because of how powerful Slavery is in comparison.

What were Cossacks like in vanilla? I only ever played BTS and beyond so I'm pretty clueless as to how different the game was before that expansion.

dito

Before when I just played casually, I loved serfdom, cause I would always be expansing and need worker actions, and whipping your empire that uses up scant happiness? that doesn't sound THAT good to me...

IIRC vanilla cossacks were strength 18, only needed Mil Trad and Gunpowder (no Rifling in those days needed for cav because cuirs were not introduced until BtS) and had +50% against mounted units.

You basically rushed to Mil Trad and destroyed everything in your path.

I think I did something like that for my only Monarch win.

Oh my.

So basically once Russia got Mil Trad you were screwed until infantry?

Assuming the game even continues on to that point obviously...

Pretty much, though siege units make it perhaps bearable. In a normal game it was possible to counter Russia, in a ren 3v3 you basically beelined MT and it was the cheapest tech beeline available. The reason that the nerf was acceptable to all game modes though was that most UU got either a strength increase or a bonus against a specific unit class, but the cossack got both. Nerfing it just brought it in line with other UU. Russia only then got "nerfed" in warlords with the release of the UB concept (with the lab replacement).
