I figured that a big catpile was underway, and I botched my invasion of Azza quite a bit. It set him back a lot, but it also didn't give me any real benefits while the others grew. I also recall slacking on my expansion, I had a lot of land available and a great economy to sustain it.
I continued the war with Azza. I conquered him but the length of war took it's toll. I'd broken his back and still had 15 or so wandering around his empire mopping up. WW was up to +19 at that point. Then there was only me, waterbat and superjm left in the game. SUperjm had far better teching capabilities than both of us (particularly me). I launched a lastditch attack on superjm which failed, and then I got tired of modern age war and offered to concede.
However, I entirely blame your lack of workers :P

I don't really like this idea. Almost everyone will pick corn and the luxury will probably be gems.

I would still like to see starting screenshots before picking but what are we doing for picking method?
I'd prefer a snakepick personally.

I support seeing the starting position and the snakepick.

While I'm more or less indifferent towards pick method, I slightly prefer something that allows more choices than a regular snake-pick. A snake-pick means that most of us will go for a Fin leader, and the list of viable civs is also relatively short. Pitboss 13 method (randomly assigned combination with 2 vetos, with bans taking into account since we decided against RBMod) would be my preference
That being said, snake-pick is fine if that's what others prefer

I hated the pick method in PB9. Being given leader and civ did not worked well for me.

PB13 method simply does not work with base BTS. Someone getting a good roll resulting in the best leader available and the best civ available has such a big advantage, way bigger than anyone can get in a snake pick.

If you are playing base BtS, there are not many pick methods that give you a great deal of viable options, but that's because there aren't that many viable trait combinations, especially for a 12 player game.
