Veteran gamers sometimes have an instinctive tendency to go left, all other things being equal.
The major reasons for this I can think of are the original Metroid and the Lone Wolf series of game books, both of which are older than some of the people reading this.

The explanation for this game might be simpler, though.
Notice how all of their Warriors started west of their Settler. No use in going past your already uncovered city. So West or North were the only logical choices left.

That city site west of America is amazing. Double flood plains, fresh water, double gems, double horses...

It will pretty interesting if he gets the location. It will be a pretty easy spot for Arabia to get and unlike America, it is not cut off by a big mountain range. Maybe a point of contention between those two.

There is something very comforting in the opening turns so far.

Bacchus is doing some interesting stuff with early resource harvesting! I don't think we've seen this in the other PBEMs, I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Harvesting is powerful, early mid or late game. The issue is, whether you have the resources to harvest in the first place. I am sure I am not telling new stuff, but harvesting using a production multiplier, is especially powerful

Looking over his rice harvest, I would call tentatively call it a very good move. Getting the extra pop out early when you have lots of 4 yield tiles is very solid.
If it had been the only rice around his capital, it would have been questionable because he then wouldn't have a resource to farm for the irrigation Eureka. But he has several.
The opportunity cost is this though: now he can't get the craftsmanship Inspiration with only one worker. He needs to build another if he wants to get it in a decent time frame. Depending on what his early culture research looks like, this could either work out just fine, or cost him some culture/turns to Political Philosophy. We shall see.

But no, I could not find any mention of it in the changelogs that have been released.

Ok, it's really not that hard to test properly, and I'll do it when I have a little time to spare, before we have to make any meaningful choice. The lacking interface just makes it non-trivial.
[No further mention in Ichabod's thread until...]

So I'm guessing he never found time to test it. Particularly because it might explain...

The queue pop-up shows it as "Modifiers", which is what you get from city states, or bonuses, but I don't seem to have any appropriate ones.
Not sure if that's actually it though, and sadly, I think it would be too spoilery even to ask about it further in either of their threads: Ichabod or pindicator might realize the question-out-of-the-blue is prompted by something in another thread, and Bacchus would surely realize that a rival had chosen God of the Forge if we asked about it in connection with his "extra" hammer.
