That option only comes up if we have a city with Buddhism, and only such cities would get the unhappiness from defiance. We would also lose AP hammers if that's relevant.

Looks like CFC is heading that way as well

Yeah, my point is that any city we would capture from CivPlayers will have Buddhism present inside, and we would have to face massive Apostolic Palace induced unhappiness as a result, since they would surely vote through a "stop the war" measure and force us to defy. Either we would have to raze everything or face crippling unhappiness in anything we captured. In both cases, CivPlayers makes a bad target to attack. I'm sorry if that was not clear.

CivFanatics has Feudalism, Machinery, and Engineering techs along with Nationalism. If they go for Horseback Riding or Guilds next (instead of the Paper/Education/Printing Press line) then they are almost certainly thinking about returning to war with the Spanish. I wonder what kind of deal those two made when they signed peace.

Does it disappear if the AP changes hands/is razed?

Some minor things till remaining:

Cancel gems deliveries to the Germans

I think the best way to get sugars is to trade spices for them ASAP (yes, our only source). We will get a spice back in 8t when we declare on the Germans, quicker than we can get a silver up. And then we can trade our spare gems to WPC and ask them to hurry up Calendar (so they can send us dyes ASAP).

What about the following way to get the forge first in AO?

T142: work cottages; forge 48/120; food 47/46 -> size 14, 24/48
T143: work 3 PHs; forge 68/120; food 24/48
T144: work 3 PHs; forge 88/120; food 24/48
T145: work 3 PHs; forge 108/120; food 24/48
T146: work 1 PH, deer, plains cottages; forge 120/120; food 30/48

On T143, GM switches off the coast and picks up the plains cottage and the grass cottage from AO. We can always shuffle tiles from from AO to GM, since we can pick up cottages all the way back to French Riviera, if needed.

Agreed on quickest Guilds possible.

For that matter, Wien has Buddhism present already, so we will have to deal with the AP as soon as we've captured that city. Unless we want to raze and re-settle a city of decent size and a good bit of infrastructure.

I think we should just keep the gems trade going until we declare war. I don't want to alert them to anything diplomacy-related if at all possible, and we're unlikely to get any use out of the gems in the next few turns. And they won't get any use out of duplicate gems either.

Can we draft simple life instead of whipping a forge? Then whip the forge when we're about to grow past our happy cap.

Should we chop a work boat in Catherine for the new city south of it?

Edit: Agree with Noble re:gems.
I have to run.

We traded gems and spices together initially, which means that we can't cancel the gems trade without also canceling the spices deal. Rather than go through a round of diplomacy to explain that, I also feel that we should leave the current deals as-is. We want the Germans to be thinking about us as little as possible right now.

Simple Life has already been drafted once; if we draft again, we'll be stuck with a happiness cap of size 7 for the next ten turns. I don't think we need one more 0 XP drafted mace that badly when we'll have about 30 to play around already.

Right, but a forge whip will whip away three pop and increase the happy cap to 9. So I think we have room for another draft.
