I'm curious which tools you guys used for diplomacy. It feels like we lurkers haven't seen that many actual diplo messages compared to past diplo PBs. Am I right to assume that you mainly used chat systems like discord for diplo and not PMs or Emails, like they did in the past?

99.9% of it was discord. Other than my messages to TBW/Gavagai/GKC which account for the .1% of messages sent. I can copy/paste screenshots if the lurkers want my side of things but alot of it is banter outside of what i put in my thread.

Also as this is the first diplo game in a long time.
1. How did diplo feel nowadays?
2. Was there anything bothering you with diplo?
3. What would you change with diplo in another diplo game?
4. How did the rules concerning tech trading turn out?

1, 2: I thought it was fine, but I only really talked to SD and Rask, and that was all on Discord. I had limited discussions early on with TBW and GKC (none with Gav) through PMs. I think that discord is a far better way of communicating. It's more natural, and it allows for actual conversations. PMs seem to enforce a kind of formality that, imo, is more likely to lead to hurt/bad feelings. In a future game I'd want to establish discord communications with everyone before the game even starts, and possibly even set up a channel on the RB discord for any public diplo (that lurkers can see too).
3, 4: I would prefer no tech trading. The system we used, while fine I guess, resulted in blocs forming early on that never really unformed. Me, SD, and Rask were essentially allied up until the point there was no-one left to be allied against. Then Gav's early demise basically ended any hope for TBW and GKC. The thing was, with a limited amount of beakers that can be traded away and no tech brokering (of course), tech trades needed to be planned out far in advance. You had to agree what techs one would tech oneself and what would be traded.
For example If I get Machinery from SD in exchange for Engineering later, well, that kinda locks us in. Since I need Machinery to tech Engineering SD has to give it to me for free and rely on trust. And maybe he needs Metal Casting from Rask in exchange for Feudalism or whatever, so he has to plan to tech in that direction, then to get Machinery, in order to get Engineering from me.
That was the sort of thing, more that anything else, imo, that resulted in the players splitting into two factions. I met Rask early and established good relations. My other neighbor was AGG Rome so I was wary from the start and made friends with SD on Rome's other side, while Rask and SD were far away so didn't need to fear the other. I'm sure similar stuff led to Gav, TBW, and GKC becoming friends. Then as the tech trading started, those relationships got further and further reinforced. So despite any late overtures from GKC or TBW, there wasn't much opportunity for them to break us up. That only happened as an inevitability once TBW and GKC were dead.
I think with more than six players perhaps that could have been avoided while still having tech trading. With 8 or 10 I think there would be more pairs forming, that would be too many to form into just two blocs. There would also be more opportunistic arrangements and deals possible with players much further removed from one's own lands than everyone was here.
In conclusion I really enjoyed this game despite the terribly unbalanced map, and I would absolutely play another diplo game, but I would prefer no tech trading, and setting up discord comms at the start.

Was it the tech trading or the diplomacy that led to the two coalitions forming? I think we need to run two more pitbosses, one with tech trading but no diplo and one with diplo but no tech trading to find out.
Completed: RB Demogame - Gillette, PBEM46, Pitboss 13, Pitboss 18, Pitboss 30, Pitboss 31, Pitboss 38, Pitboss 42, Pitboss 46, Pitboss 52 (Pindicator's game), Pitboss 57
In progress: Rimworld

I used PMs, they worked out well enough for me except for the part where I ended up getting crushed mercilessly.

I would love to play a diplo game with no tech trading. I planned to start another CtH game with the new year and a new version of it. Making it a diplo game would be a great addition.

I mean, quite a lot of the diplo seemed to be about tech trading, so I don't think they can be separated. Also, I don't think it would be possible to have a game with tech trading but no diplo.

Yeah, the only way to do tech trading being have the tech and offer it in the window? ... wouldnt be fun, i could see alot of misclicks.
Id join a no-tech trading diplo game in the future.
