Thanks guys. smile

Serdoa Wrote:Hey Gaspar, I wanted to comment on that for quite some time now (basically since I saw it). I agree with the sentiments that groups should be setup so that the skill-disparity is not too great. But when I look at PBEM25 despite me feeling quite outmatched by plako and mackoti (later on when I realized how much better they played and what errors I did) I wouldn't want to miss the experience. I think my game improved quite a lot by playing against those guys and learning from them. And I surely am not the only one who experienced that. Though of course if the whole game is thrown out of whack because of a massive skill-disparity, that is no fun either.

Apart from that and completely unrelated to your game here and to the topic discussed, I don't think that I have lept past the PBEM14-group. And if, then I'd say that spreadsheets have the least to do with it. Didn't need one to tell you at the start of this game to concentrate on one thing, did I? wink

I don't disagree on the learning from great players thing but excepting the aforementioned PBEM14, that's all I've done. PBEM12 - Kyan; PB4 - Spulla, plako, mackoti, LP; PBEM24 - mackoti; PBEM26 - rego, pindicator; FFH7 - Kyan et al; PBEM29 - mackoti, novice, SevenSpirits. I think its good to challenge yourself. I have learned a ton from those games and I am definitely a much better player than I was a year ago. I also think its good to be able to recognize when you're not good enough. smile

In terms of you as a player - I didn't mean to diminish your growth as a player to simply your spreadsheets (though I think you underestimate how awesome they are.) You're very clearly a thoughtful person and it comes out in your play (as it did in werewolf games.) Suffice to say your recent play has been very impressive in my book, as was your help here early on. And its one thing to know to focus on one thing - we discussed it ourselves quite often both in thread and out. Its another to maintain the focus to execute it. That's where we failed.

Nonetheless, I quite appreciate the analysis. smile

oledavy Wrote:Why do you think they offered that trade?

It looks to me like they're trying to extend a hand of friendship. They have to be pretty worried about Mackoti's position in this game.

I saved this for last as its most relevant to the game at hand. Yes, I think they're very worried about mackoti - we underestimated him for probably the billionth time (at least I did) and he's obviously got the hammer at the moment. Lewwyn is in deep, deep trouble and given Lewwyn's current pseudo-Zen approach and oft-stated (to me at least) desire to cut his involvement in games here I wonder if he's going to be going balls to the wall (so to speak) to defend. Regardless, I suspect mack will have a large portion of his empire before he's done.

In terms of us - yeah, I think to some extent that they're extending a hand in friendship. The question is, do we want that? They've been at least as lousy a neighbor to us as we've been to them. So based on that, no reason to care. They have a city that is uniquely positioned to navally fork like half our empire. They have cultural control of a major portion of the East Indies and they shut us out of the tundra. So on a tactical level, they're our most natural enemy.

So the only reason I can see to kiss and make-up would be if we could somehow make a game of it from here if we did so. Do you see a way for that to happen? Does anyone? I don't see a way back into this for us. They will have rifles in probably 10 turns or less. Cavs won't be far behind that, Destroyers not far behind that. We're a billion years away from that. We are ~25t from economic explosion. In 25t its probably not an exaggeration to say that mackoti will be fielding Infantry and N7 not far behind that (or vice-verse.) So lurkers, teammates, global lurkers - tell me what incentive I have to play for here? A quiet 3rd place finish doesn't appeal to me, all caveats about not wanting to finish last aside. Right now the best gambit I see is to get a quick edge somewhere and try and hurt one or both of the leaders a bit before inevitably going down in a smoldering heap. But I'm open to discussion on the topic. As long as that's the case, I don't really care if N7 want to be friends.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

Play nice with N7, adopt the role of client state and reap the benefits. Support them against the Mackoti juggernaut while doing as little actual fighting as possible.

Then, after the smoke has cleared from the world war and they least expect it:

:toucher:

From what you've shown us, Mackoti is well on track to runaway with the game. N7 are going to have to fight him. With Lewwyn on the way out, you're the only other state with any clout. Whoever you throw your support behind will probably come out on top. Alternatively, you could support Mackoti against N7. However, I think you'd have much better of odds of winning supporting N7. Mackoti's position is more dominant, and if you help him, he's far more likely to gobble you up in the aftermath of a world war.

Look at how NS7 played diplomatically in PBEM23. They tried really hard to lock down their border with Yuris, and maintained that 'alliance' even though they could have stomped him at multiple points along the way at little cost. I feel like Seven is desperately clamoring for a friend as the world goes to hell, and I think it's in your interest to do so.

For now..... devil

Noble and I discussed Dave's post:

Quote:Gaspar: did you read daves latest post?
NobleHelium: i'll read yours and his before sleeping
Gaspar: ok
NobleHelium: ok i read it
basically if we were closer and had more land (or a sian to expand into) i might do that
Gaspar: Well
we obviously could backstab lewwyn
NobleHelium: i don't think we'd get very far
Gaspar: but that just brings us into conflict with mackoti earlier
NobleHelium: yes
Gaspar: yeah, I think the problem with the Dave analysis
is he makes two I believe erroneous assumptions:
1. N7 plan to attack mackoti soon
2. We can catch up without them going armageddon on each other
NobleHelium: well #1 might happen
#2 is not
Gaspar: I mean, I keep an open mind
if N7 attacks mackoti
and it looks bloody
maybe we reconsider
NobleHelium: well they're probably not going to attack unless we give them 10t of peace :P
<snip>
NobleHelium: i mean mack can basically tech economics at this point
and corp after that
Gaspar: well
i think N7 are still ahead on beakers
and deeper in the tree
NobleHelium: well
for corp
Gaspar: so it will take mack a little time to catchup
NobleHelium: does mack have paper
can we trade maps
Gaspar: the 70000 turns of GA he's about to have
not as of T100
I didn't check last turn
or rather
NobleHelium: ok so mack needs paper edu eco const corp
Gaspar: i didn't pay attention to that when I checked his trade screen
NobleHelium: to be sort of even with GLH
although
const will give him rep
that's probably about the same as GLH or more
Gaspar: yeah
NobleHelium: i mean if we could negotiate
say they give us latte isles and maybe we give them OC and then we sign a long assed NAP
i might agree to that and just play most of the rest of the game practicing builder micro
although latte and the NAP is a bit redundant
but whatever
Gaspar: yeah
I mean I don't entirely agree
I don't really want to practice builder
I don't have anything to practice it for
but basically I look at the game and say
wtf can I do?
answer: nothing
so might as well take a couple of their cities for fun
<snip>
Gaspar: well, I mean that on multiple levels
this part of the game coming up
is probably the part of the game I'm most comfortable with my mastery of
NobleHelium: really
Gaspar: mid-game is pretty straightforward i think
though I suppose
I've never been this far behind before
NobleHelium: anyway i guess it's not really practice
doesn't take rocket science to determine what buildings to build
and how to micro the workers right now
it's mostly that i haven't done much of this
so it's enjoyable to me
Gaspar: I like to play Civ
its a fun game
doesn't matter how many times I play it, I always enjoy it
but y'know
its a little disheartening being so ridiculously far behind

Anyway, that's what we're thinking. Still quite open to competing opinions, though.

Gaspar left out the part where I bashed him for his quitting talk again. wink

Also, Mack has the GLH, why would he obsolete it?

Quick, someone with a secret decoder ring, we were offered the following 3 trades:

1. N7: 10g gift
2. N7: OB/Map/Silver for Us: OB/Map/Dyes
3. N7: Horse for Us: Fish

It seems king of strange for me to try and send cryptic messages through the in-game options of Civ IV to your opponents in a no-diplo game. Since we are always the same crew playing the games, we will soon all understand what some of those things were supposed to mean (i.e. 2 pig trades mean a dogpile - of course this is just created right now, so not a spoiler).

Suddenly, we have a diplo game again. With some people thinking they are doing some special thing (especially if not all the community knows the meaning of the codes).

So, why play a no-diplo game if you are going to try this?

Because it's hilarious the first couple of times smile

FWIW - I agree with you.

I think it's pretty obvious what they're trying to say here.

Horse for Fish is a metaphor: you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
"Open borders world map silver for open borders world map dyes" is an anagram for "A Dabbed Ed Mill Sloppy Mr Sorrow Vow"
http://wordsmith.org/anagram/anagram.cgi...t=1000&a=n
In other words, they're sorry for their sloppy vow to you earlier and are offering 10g to make up for it, but are not trying to force anything. Simple!
