Diplomacy Master Thread- Helping Your Opponents Beat Themselves

I'd also be afraid of making a mortal enemy of anybody we can't wipe off the face of the game. Let's say we invaded Apolyton. Whether we failed, succeeded, or were hilariously, wildly successful, they would respond by striking back with espionage. The more turns we can go in this game without somebody messing with our civics and religion, the better.

I think it's pretty unavoidable that we won't have any friends in this game from here on out, but let's avoid making mortal enemies for as long as possible.

Sure, Apolyton just become the new tech leader by a longshot. I actually kind of think that's a big plus for us. It means that we have more legit-looking competition, which will make people slower to try and hinder us. But we have double their cities and double their land. They weren't a contender to win the game yesterday, and frankly, I still don't think they are. But they are a useful distraction.

Good points, Speaker and Zargon.

Apolyton makes me uneasy though. Not only are they the clear tech leader, their GNP is also 4 times our GNP.

At the very least we want to make sure that Apolyton does draft some janissaries to at least somewhat slow down their farmer's gambit. Should our diplo goal be NAPs with all our neighbours except Apolyton?

I really don't care much that Apolyton used their GSpy to steal three techs from us...

I definitely don't think we should be attacking them right now. And I have the utmost confidence that we'll get back to outteching them soon.

Look at their number of cities. They are not a long-term threat as such. Were they to steamroll a neighbor, that might change, but they are very squeezed for land right now.

The only valid target I see for our army to go for in 10 turns is WPC. Take them into protective custody or whatever that is called. smile
On a more serious note. Consolidate our German gains. I think we can grab the GNP lead pretty quickly.

Why do I feel if it had been CFC stealing techs the reaction would be less...forgiving smile?

Because that would've been banned by our NAP agreement with CFC I think.

If the German war goes smoothly and quickly I'd be in favour of attacking Apolyton right away. Stealing techs is a clear violation of the NAP so we don't have to wait 12 turns.
If we take 1-2 cities they will have to start building military while we can stop and defend (janissaries ain't that good at attacking are they?)

I think it's about opportunity here, if we have the time and resources to attack Apolyton right after the Germans go down and damage them, why not do it? If they research gunpowder and adopt nationhood we don't attack or just stop the attack.

As a couple others have said, we need 20-30 turns of peace very badly to consolidate our gains from the German war. We're going to be well over 30 cities at the end of this war, with no room to absorb more (we've already taken more than we really should!) Peace talks are very good news. NAPs with as many teams as possible, please.

I just don't think Apolyton can hurt us that badly. In a worst case scenario, we can mass-build Wealth for a dozen turns and push through Gunpowder/Rifling, following their path. Then what can they do to us? How could they ever get more than the odd border city before we have legions of rifles on the border? They're only blustering because they plan to have all these allies. If we can peel off CFC or CivPlayers with any kind of NAP deal, I expect we'll see a different tone from Apolyton in a real hurry.

In the extreme long run, there's very little Apolyton can to do win a tech race. We'll have double their cities by the end of this war, and that is just about impossible to overcome (worse once we can finally push on to State Property).

This is exactly the kind of mindset that loses games. Why would be the purpose of attacking Apolyton? Because we're mad that they used a Great Spy? How could we take cities defended by jannisaries or rifles using our big army of maces and knights? Even if we did capture a couple cities, would they even be worthwhile? We've got a dozen new captured cities already!

Not trying to pick on you, but I see these mistakes all the time in these PBEM/Pitboss games. Another war immediately after the German would be a classic case of meaningless overaggression.
