We should send WPC a letter of encouragement and wish them luck with bombarding down and taking the city so they do anything sillt.

Random thought: can we just keep wanzleben? It doesn't look as though the germans have much in the area. Even if we lose something on the counterattack that might be less hammers than having to whip a settler. I have no idea what happens to their longbow whip if we take the city and then lose it again, but I would guess that it disappears?
Disclaimer: I haven't had time to keep up properly lately so this may be an idiotic suggestion if we've been planning to raze it for a better dotmap since turn 50 etc.

Wow, looks like the Germans really got owned in their battle against WPC. I wish I could see what the individual battle odds were there, because I suspect that WPC must have been really lucky to kill almost twice as many units, despite being on the receiving end of catapult collateral.

Here are the borders with Apolyton once the German culture disappears:
That spot would be completely indefensible, and we would never get control of the tile northwest of the city. You never want to have a city in this position, since it's a total sitting duck and requires a massive garrison of soldiers at all times. See the German city on our own border earlier which was impossible to defend and easily razed.
We want to put the city two tiles south (red dot) where we get a decent mix of resources to share and have far better defensive position.
EDIT: Also, I don't think WPC got exceptionally lucky or anything in their fighting. The Germans sent in their cats first, and the WPC swords would have defended against that. Sure enough, all 5 swords lived, killing cats and getting knocked down to low health so that they didn't defend further. The later German catapults faced WPC catapults, with few deaths on either side (a lot of the later German cats retreated in those cat vs cat battles). Next, the Germans sent in their war elephants, and that's where most of the deaths took place, WPC spears weakened by collateral damage dying to 8 strength war elephants. Nearly all of WPC's losses were those spears, they lost 6 of them. Finally, the Germans attacked with their axes, and the axe vs dog soldier battles weren't that effective, with the dogs winning most of them. The dogs have a low base strength and rely on the +100% vs melee to deal their damage, so collateral damage didn't affect them much. It's all pretty understandable.
The real question is how many promotions WPC has available now to heal their units. I have no idea what that situation looks like. Probably not many, since WPC promoted pre-combat (which was the correct decision). Amusingly enough, they probably would have done better to promote most of their cats with Combat I, which would have caused them to get much better odds in the cat vs cat fights.

Siege units can't get Combat. That was a change sometime around the release of BTS. It's annoying when you get a siege unit up to City Raider 3, then it gets another promotion, and weaksauce Drill is all that's there to help.

I don't think WPC can promote at all because we're still playing the same turn.

From what you wrote, though, it seems like the Germans lost 10 axes and didn't even kill a single dog soldier. That's amazing. Even if all the dogs were at full health that would be unlikely, and collateral damage would have pushed their odds below 50%. But maybe the catapults soaked up a lot of the collateral and they still had dogs at full health.
Ed: according to diplo they actually lost 4 dogs so that's more like what I would have expected. Still a huge victory for WPC though.

Just to remind everyone, this is what they proposed:
WPC Wrote:RB gets the southern half of the Incan civ, including the cities of:
1. Wolfrathausen
2. Worms
3. Wassenburg
4. Weilderstadt
5. Wanzelhein
6. Webringen (capitol)
WPC would get the northern half, including the cities of:
1. Westheim
2. Wesselburn
3. Warendorf
4. Wien
5. Wittenbirge
6. Wilhelmshaven
And this is our reply:
scooter Wrote:Wars are a big pain, and we will be aiming to defeat the Germans as soon as possible. But we can promise a few things if you do the same for us:
1) We won't race you for the cities in your half of the land split.
2) We will prioritize capture of cities in our half over cities in your half.
3) We will share any useful intel that we come across
4) And of course, we will be sincerely rooting for your speedy progress and success.
So keeping Wismar is in both the spirit and letter of the deal. Not sure if novice was asking based on keeping our word, or whether the city was actually where we wanted it .
