I finished the worker and started on a workboat. More resources to the south.

I started the wheel so my worker will have things to do after the farm and camp. I am sending the scout to explore the small peninsula to make sure I want to settle on the plains hill.

I explored the northern peninsula. The plains hill is indeed the best city site. Almost like this map was hand crafted... I will get done with the workboat in 1 turn. My plan is to research archery next and build barracks - archer. Warriors feel like a waste being protective.

I decided against a barracks and went for another workboat next. My archers can gain experience fighting barbarians and a workboat will be useful for scouting and when I settle more cities.

Barracks early are usually not worth it; you could have an extra unit and a half for that promotion. Similarly, archers aren't usually worth it this early either. PRO does change the picture somewhat, but in general you want an active defense that kills enemies before they reach your cities, and doesn't allow them to roam around pillaging.

It is usually better to have at least one food resource in the first ring for each new city if you are not CRE. This is much more important than a 2 hammer city tile. For border cities there are additional considerations and sometimes a less efficient plant is better if you can secure a hill tile to settle on and avoid jungle/hills/(forest) in the first ring for enemy units to advance on.

Even with PRO, getting archery so early is not a good idea. Other techs are more important. Archers are also mediocre anti-barb units as they can't always deny pillaging.

I prefer building in a optimal city site for the long term rather than for the short term. Border expansion should not be a problem with Charismatic monuments. In my experience archers with Drill 2 and 3 are good against all early barbarian units except when attacking axemen.
