Which would be a nice addition to this thread .
I've recently run into an interesting description of one of Wagner's: http://www.popehat.com/2013/07/17/popeha...annhauser/
Makes me interested enough that I'll cast my irrelevant lurker vote for an Opera theme.

On the other hand we've had two lurkers vote for the opera theme...
Edit: Alright screw it we're going with operas. +1 culture bonus.

AhhhhhhH!!!! A fishing start would have been great here. Damnit why couldn't we get a wet farm tile? Seeing no land food greater than four kind of sucks.
Time to get simming I guess. Where should we move the scout? The main options seem to be SE-S or SW-SW, to see if there's a river grain resource near. Tile bleed will matter, I need to work on figuring it out.
Implications of RBMod: Settling in place would probably mean getting a worker first while going for Hunting, since that's what hooks up cows and sheep. And the new Exp means a bonus hammer for every 3, for a worker or a WB. So we get a nice bonus if we can get 6 hammers of production early, which we can easily do at size 2. Again, fishing with the double accelerated WB build (PH start and Exp bonus hammer) would have been sweet sauce, but oh well.

mmm just normal games? (e.g. monopoly, dominion, go, chess, etc.)
In my MP we had a guy doing famous spacecrafts (Hubble, voyager, cassini, SoHo, SDO, hinode) (for this one I could do maybe some knowledge-write ups)
I used a list of "mythical places" once. (Avalon, El Dorado, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_myt...cal_places )
Also I tried beatle-songs (Yesterday, help)

Yeah, all your ideas are good, but we can't argue with two lurkers coming out of nowhere and supporting the opera theme. Lurkers are going to be a very scarce resource in this game.
I especially like the spacecraft idea. I've tried a bit of Kerbal Space Program and had fun with it, but I totally suck at it.
We have the boreal forest style of trees, so I wonder if that's another indicator that we're near the north pole. I like that better than an equator position since it means fewer potential warmongering neighbours.
The game won't start until at least Monday, and we'll presumably have 48 hours for the first turn, so hopefully we'll have time to get Mindy's input on this position too.

You really should not feel pressured into a theme you only half-heartedly want to do. Afterall this game should be fun for you and not a chore. I for one will lurk you (and all the others) as long as you provide updates. So please feel free to use the theme you like or feel more happy about.

Rowain: I like the theme now, provided it doesn't alienate the ded-lurkers.
So this sandbox is pretty close to Brick's screenshot:
My first inclination is to want to move the scout SW-SW, because it will reveal more river tiles. Crucially, I don't think SE-S will reveal the tile 3S2W from the settler.
Settling in place may still be a contending start, unless we see riverside corn or something dramatic.
