Do the walls matter in the gunpowder era? I guess if the enemy wants to reduce defenses with cats/trebs... Still are the walls still worth?

Still are the walls still worth? No one has cannons and they're not ignored by knights (or of course older units). I think they're well worthwhile with stone in threatened cities.
Ok fair enough on walls, thanks for your answers. I agree with not drafting Starfall until gunpowder.

BTW, do settled great generals (admirals) give XP to naval units? If they do, then we really should make Wien into our naval centre.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width
Banking was suggested by me, and I've been pretty well convinced that we don't want to divert because the benefits of being first to Communism are so high, even though I do continue to think that Banking has better persistent benefits per beaker invested. So I'm on board with gunpowder next, then decide if we're doing Communism or Rifling, and beeline it, unless we decide we want Communism first, and it looks like Apolyton are going to beeline it as well, thus beating us regardless. That means we probably want to save gold after Gunpowder to see what Apolyton techs next to see if they're going for Communism, Rifling, or Democracy as their next big target.
Since it now looks like we're liable to lose approximately none of our maces in the remaining German war, can I interest anybody in whipping a Starfall courthouse and holding the overflow for the walls with wealth builds? Or is that still an idea that's only interesting to me? If we can get gunpowder in 2 turns, I believe it'll cost us 2 maces and a musket, or if the alternative is to not draft maces, probably 2 muskets and a handful of gold. Edit: with CP cancelling the NAP on 170, I don't like this idea anymore. I'm pretty sure the GG will give xp to naval units. Drydock in Wien = double promo boats. All my long-term naval production worries are gone.
I am seriously impressed / intimidated / horrified at the amount of work that went into this whole Printing Press thing. I was also pretty sure that after all of that, we were going to lose the coinflip and get a Prophet or something. But fortuna was kind to us, and we have a slickly-managed Scientist lightbulb ready for this turn. Well done!
I'm also very happy with the setup in place for the double Great Person pop 20 turns down the road, which will let us revolt into our second Golden Age whether or not we land the Communism Great Spy. That is some impressive work. I don't think that the team needs me at all at this point... (July 11th, 2013, 18:29)Sullla Wrote: I don't think that the team needs me at all at this point... Heh, have you watched the scooter / noblehelium comedy double-act on the streams ? Kidding, kidding. As much as I cringe while I watch the streams back, you guys do make good choices, especially with the military tactics. The "check the forums to see what that guy sooooo says" parts are my favourite! Kidding about that last sentence.
I aim to please. Whenever I need go afk I just tell scooter that it's time to check the sooooo posts on the forum.
Don't tell Gaspar though or he'll get jealous. Anyway, walls and castles are worthwhile in threatened border cities, but we don't need to fuss about having stone or not too much. If we actually need them come wartime we can build them regardless.
