I had to replay my turn and redeclare on Ipecac. This is Elum's rifle stacks :
And Ipecac's defense :
I seem to have forgotten to take a shot of my troops
Well this isn't great because most likely Elum will get the city and I'll have to face Ipecac in the north (I'm sending some troops there, I think I won't lose any city)

Well first I don't see Elum going for a second war right away. There was a lapse of time between Grimace's death and the attack on Ipecac, which was probably necessary to get the economy back in order. So I'm expecting the same here. Second I don't think there are enough rifles here to really take down my stack this turn after conquering the city, and if the city falls before next turn I'll be retreating to MoM city anyway. Where I'll be able to upgrade to rifles as soon as I get the gold for it. Third, many of Elum's cats will have died taking Zero insertion so I'll be annoying to conquer. In any case my power is truly ridiculous thanks to the Luxembourg debacle (below Ipecac even now), so I'll only live for as long as Elum and CH decide to let me be.

Hmmm GermanJojo (or other lurkers) with Elum needing a replacement in a week isn't this becoming ridiculous ? Once again I don't mind playing, it's just a lot of problems for nothing, if CH and Whosit think the game is won then we should stop regardless of whether they have fun or not. If they don't think the game is won, 1) they're delusional (part of that is because CH and Elum's empires don't touch, so a 2vs1 is close to impossible) and 2) with someone else than Elum taking over it will be super unfair if that person makes a blunder and loses.

Clearly, we just need his nominal vet dedlurker to take over. Solves everything!

Mackoti taking over a leading position in a green game is definitely what we need

Well the game is still on, and Ipecac emptied his city : I took it, it comes with a lighthouse and an army of rifles just west of it.
I feel like I stole it from Elum, so I offered compensation. I know Elum can take the gold and attack but it's not like the gold would help me defend that much. Also, it's probably fairer, if Elum's army hadn't been there Ipecac wouldn't have deleted his army and I'd have been unable to take the city.

Cheers for the game Adrien, coming back to nab fourth after all those barb problems is a nice result!
Anything you think you've learned from this game?

OK let's do this. This analysis is done without knowing what's in other people's threads.
Shaka of Rome was a reasonably good choice. Praets came in late but they were useful.
I can't completely draw conclusions from this game because I lost two workers early on (one to barbs, one to Agent's impi snipe). Even though I end up officially 4th I was more like 6th or last this game, but my growth curve was slacked by the early losses. Would not losing the workers have made me closer to Whosit ? I'll never know.
I made some pretty big development mistakes, like not whipping Moai city's granary ASAP, and not getting enough settlers out. I think I'll be more careful from now on. Also I shouldn't have settled the foodless city, 1E would have been much better in many ways (still not convinced about 1W). But the main problem was that I overestimated the distance between Dreylin/Ipecac and me. I had only met CH so I thought the gold site in the SW was clearly inside my natural sphere of influence, and was even angry at the Viking stone city when I shouldn't have. At the same time I didn't settle the chokepoint city near CH which was much closer, and CH built annoying Luxembourg later on. Focusing on an enemy that wasn't settling that aggressively was a major strategic mistake. Less wars with Vikings would have given me better results against the Zulu and maybe a peaceful settlement of the northern peninsula which I should have settled earlier.
Overall I can't say I was lucky with my neighbors. Zulu was aggressive from the start (and leader in power for a long time) and Vikings were a pain. I have my responsibility in our relationship (as is the case with all relationships) but they still decided to make this a constant cold war by doing aggressive sniping and razing whenever possible. Elum on the other hand had backward Grimace and strangely-peaceful-in-the-west-until-super-late Vikings as neighbors, which must have been much easier to deal with. Not that it takes anything away from the win of course.
I think I shouldn't have declared on CH in the end. Of course it failed mainly because Whosit peaced out early but backstabbing Agent would have been a better choice due to his backwardness. I'd have kept the eastern cities and would have gotten a few Zulu ones.
One more thing I regret is not getting more help from you. You were very helpful at times but I came in thinking you would log in every few turns to take a look which was an unrealistic expectation given the amount of time you needed for PB18. I should have made better reports and explained my plans a few turns ahead to make it easier for you to help. Your help and input was great and I should have tried to get more of it.
