Yeah, the map really does rock. Too bad we couldn't have settled more of it banghead.

Yeah the map has been great so far. Created some nice early action and looks like more to come. Only problem I've seen is the forgotten copper for the Greece position which had a bit of an effect on how things were played.

Small point, but I'd also note allowing Rome to see gold on the first time might have been better avoided (I'm not trying to fault Olodune at all, that is so minor I suspect any map maker would have missed it. However, it has had a significant effect on the game none the less.)

I've only been lurking this thread for the past day or so, so do you mind explaining what you mean here?

LiPing made the decision to move the intial settler adjacent to the rice resource. The gold was then visible on T1 after the warrior was moved for max fog-clearing, which then resulted in the settler getting moved closer to the gold (and with iron in the BFC). Had the gold not been visible on T1, it would not have been in the capital. Rome's initial GNP would have been lower, and so on and so forth. So the gold has had a big impact on Rome's game.

Of course, I have been closely following Spulla and just peripherally watching everything else. A more dedicated lurker could probably explain it better than I.

Reading Liping's thread will help a lot as she initially was commenting/justifying her early moves a lot.

But basically, she was not super happy with her start, decide to check by moving warrior (like everyone alse) and land on a tile that allowed her to see gold on a hill (compatible with her food bonus) she decide was worth moving for.
Since on the following move, she also saw a grass deer, she settle on a stronger spot (and even better with Iron in the BFC).

edit after reading Rowain comment
It was in fact more likely the deer she saw after the first warrior move then saw the gold with the first settler move. (which was decided by seeing the deer, which means she correctly decide that a forrested grass deer was better than a clam/crab)

Ähm she didn't see the gold after the first move of the warrior. Her warrior had to move twice before she saw the gold. COnsidering what nice Sullla saw after the first move and the fact that Korea had 3 Wheats visible after the first move (and still decided to settle in place) I think the gold was not an error of the mapmaker. Besides the starts were randomized so it was not a spot designed for Rome wink

Nope. She was not happy with the start (she didn't see the lake near the rice so assumed that it might be dry-rice) moved the warrior discovered that there was another crab near the rice (which was to her relieve next a lake) moved the settler. NExt turn she moved the warrior first again and discovered the gold and the deer and decided to spend another turn to get gold, deer, crab and rice into her capital.

Of the starts the only one I feel a little abashed by is Broker/Plakos start -- and they decided to found in place anyways smile

Poor Broker and Plako! They seem pretty screwed, the best they can hope for is marginalized existence on the islands.

How much of their sorry state do the lurkers here think can be attributed to their not having copper near their capital, vs. poor play in general? I suppose I would have played things a bit differently myself (particularly on the diplomatic side) but I doubt I would have fared much better under the circumstances. What do you guys think?
