From my experience, go with scouting efficiency, with no contact we are still flying rather blind.

Slinger chases and redlines barb scout, but won't be able to shoot at him next turn, alas. We find tundra in the south, which is an interesting sign. I know think there isn't anybody to our north or south, which is a good start. We might still have four fronts -- north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west, but at least we'll effectively be a part of two separate triangles and can play diplomacy
I harvest southern rice for an extra pop point. This gives a couple of things -- it speeds up the warrior and following settler by a turn, extra culture and science, and most importantly, I will now drop from 4 to 3 instead of 3 to 2 when the settler completes. This means my 2-2 tiles will be worked continuously from now. This also lets me grow to easily grow to 4 without working a food tile. Builder will move to chop a forest into a settler, and use the last charge to farm the marsh rice.
The southern river is absoltely epic to settle. I could even consider stone circles here, but harvesting stone is plain better.

Way enough production at the AE (absolutely epic) site in the south. The question is if you go for this one over the western one?

I seem to be benefiting from an undocumented feature, whereby I'm getting an extra cog into Warrior building. Will post a screenie later. The queue pop-up shows it as "Modifiers", which is what you get from city states, or bonuses, but I don't seem to have any appropriate ones.
I'm also somehow last on both science and culture, the first is puzzling. My best bet is that the score either takes account of the number of techs as well as science rate, or the other scientific CS is very centrally located and gave out nice, easy quests. Maybe there is a third scientific CS also.
Still no contact nor neighbours on Settler overlay.

Could it be caused by happiness? I believe the capital starts with additional Amenities.

That was my first thought, but I'm now at 3 pop and there are no extra amenities.

Well, I find coast to the east in two places concurrently
Barring a bizarre land bridge somewhere in between my easterly units, looks like I'm actually on the eastern periphery. I really hope there isn't a civ I'm boxing in to the south-east.

Some nice city placements possible here. 5 more turns and we probably have the lay of the land. Here is to hoping this is th edge of the pangea!

T20 -- complete a warrior, start Settler, takes 8 turns, but will be chopped. Growth to 4 takes 3 turns, so it should all align pretty well. Land bridge to the east not ruled out, and the west will be scouted by a scout, build that following the settler, then probably a monument. No craftsmanship for a while for me, but I'm not that bothered -- I am going to shoot for a quick Early Empire and build settlers with the modifier.
