Toroidal maps are really nice because they mitigate the harm from arctic starts, however they tend to make organized leaders a much more valuable asset. The "balanced" map option is also nice (not the one that guides the resource distribution, but the map type that is similar to Pangea.) A customized Donut map would be really nice as well. Also, the less espionage the better, I think that it was terribly implemented in civ 4 as opposed to 3.

Just a FYI, as some players may have forgotten, but base BtS toroidal has harsher city maintenance than cylindrical, and you are playing on Emperor.
