Unfortunately, I think that the die has been cast on this one, and we lurkers will need to be content following other games until the MTDG is over and Team RB opens up their private sub-forum. IMHO, the concerns are valid and I don't blame anyone for making this decision.
Krill had mentioned that CFC is accepting anyone who wants to join. I don't know if this is the actual case (they might have the exact same reservations as RB), but it did get me thinking. Would anyone on Team RB object to me asking to join CFC? I would much rather globally lurk Realms Beyond for the next 18 months than join another team for the MTDG, but if I can have both, why not! If people here feel that I should not continue lurking RB if I join CFC, then I will stick with RB. Also, I obviously would not read any information that the RB Team posts publicly about this game if I were to join another team.

You are more than welcome to join or lurk any team as long as you do not already have private forum access. Nobody here would be offended in anyway. For clarification: playing on CFC's team would not exclude you from any RB content except the private forum. You are welcome to lurk any of the other many, many games to your hearts content.
The decision to lock the private forum is one which has been made by every team and the reasons, in my opinion, are both valid and reasonable.
I think it is worth re-iterating one point for those that didn't get access: RB will be making a public thread with regular updates. This thread will likely have a slight amount of time delay. (eg. "We just built Hagia Sophia!", rather than "we're planning on building Hagia Sophia"). Considering the folk that have stepped forward for the role, i'm looking forward to that thread just as much as the the ones in the private forum

You can't even do that until you've met every team in the game as it's out of game contact and revealing information that other teams lack, so don't expect that public thread to exist for the first 6 months of the game.

Hey, Mr Positive :neenernee
I'm not sure if that's necessarily true. We won't be using it to communicate with other players, just to report. We can make that clear in the title and first page. If they continue reading after that, that's up to them but we wouldn't care too much.
Do you think any other team would complain if team RB decided not to make their 'main' threads public? I agree that we will have to avoid some specifics but the idea is for the thread to be more about fun than anything else. This is all just my opinion of course.

We wouldn't be trying to contact other teams, so it'd be irrelevent, and spoilers for the other teams to read anyway...

Requesting permission to join as ded-lurker. I will not provide any civ skills that you will otherwise be lacking, but I would enjoy cheering from the sidelines. RB, let's bash some heads.

Because this is a competitive game played by civvers across a variety of sites, we have created our own private subforum for our planning and discussion. It appears in the Pitboss section, but is only visible once you have been granted access. Here are the steps for that:
*Click on your User CP
*Click on 'Group Memberships' under the 'Networking' heading
*You should see 'CFC Team Pitboss Players' as the only available choice
*Tick the 'Join Group' circle on the right side and then the 'Join Group' button
That will send a request out. Once approved you will be able to see the subforum. Please note that if you have no visible history at all (for instance zero posts and/or an extremely recent join date) your request may be delayed, and it will behoove you to proactively explain your request for access in this thread.
Like T-Hawk says below, this thread is now for recruiting and cheerleading, but not for settings or strategic discussion.
Please read the above mate to sign up.

This isn't a game where putting [SPOILERS] in a tag is sufficient. I think Krill's right, that we'd have to wait for full contact to make a post that could plausibly be read by anybody.

Thanks Kyan for the response and clarification. I thought this would be the sentiment, but wanted to check because I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable about who is lurking their threads.
I'll try to be more active on the forum, though I don't know that I could commit to the consistency required to actually play in one of the games here. Thanks again to everyone for all the awesome reporting that goes on here, and good luck to team RB!
