Same problem. You don't invest in scouting units to meet people and no more map trades.

I probably wouldn't play a game that has map trading at Alphabet. Never mind balance, it just takes out my favorite part of Civ. There's definitely some value in getting a workboat or galley or two out there. After you learn who is is located where, it could sometimes be possible to read how the geopolitics of the game may play out, which informs strategy at least a little bit at home much earlier. I'm not saying I played this part of PB18 particularly well, but I enjoy thinking about it!
I'll chime in that I also enjoyed the no map trading aspect of play. It is a nice change to not have the entire map figured out super early and makes the player invest if he wants to gain that map knowledge.
Not having map trading early certainly does give a lot of advantage to weirdos like me, who would write scripts to analyze the tracker to figure stuff about the world they couldn't otherwise know. Early map trading really does level the playing field a lot.
Well, it looks like the 52-player game is gonna be a thing...probably once 18, 22 and 23 all end (seems like all should end in roughly similar time scales, bonus!). However, we should probably start to consider recruitment now. Brick and Krill had a cool idea for mapmaking that uses a team, I'll let them explain.
We also need a team of determined individuals willing to ruthlessly roaming-sub, because pauses shouldn't happen.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

Roaming barbarian subs!
