Your start wasn't that challenging to play. You had seven forests for 140 hammers, you needed to grab Fishing, Pottery, Mining and BW in some order and chop 60 hammers into a granary ASAP, and 60 hammers into work boats. Sumeria even gave you the best starting techs.

No forests into workers or settlers until that was done. 9 food total through a granary gives you a settler every 7 turns (including the build and whip turns) so you knew you could split off one of the food some of the time to manage happy issues.

It's not rocket science, otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it.

Edit: An example start given here

IF a start has only 1 correct way to play it. Then its not worth playing.

your entire comment reeks of ass. I play the game to have fun, not have to micromanage every little thing.

SD, normally I agree with you that starts should have flexibility, but that can't be the case when the game is specifically advertised and made as a random map. What do you expect to happen in these types of games?

I think he might have had an issue with your tone, for which I don't blame him. Commodores post for instance also has suggestions on how the start could have been played, but his comment wasn't as insulting.

I don't care what you think Mjmd. Go away.

I'm not the one who insulted another member of the forum. You've done this twice now. Once to Nauf and once to SD. Be better.

Superdeath, Commodore and Krill are correct.
Your land is not the reason you lost this game. Your land was fine by the standards of this map. It was actually very green and had sufficient food and happiness. Nice lakes. The extreme flatness is a weird feature, but everyone had weird features, and you could have worked around yours.
And big picture: How can you seriously blame your land for your defeat almost every game? Are you just the unluckiest person on the forum, who was screwed by the map like 10+ times?

If you really are having fun, then go ahead and ignore us and play how you want. I'm not even offended by your (often despair-induced) crazy attacks like some people are, not that you did one this game anyway. But it really seems like you aren't having fun, based on the frustration you often express in your rare reports. I remember that you used to report more often...
And if you aren't having fun, Krill's suggestion that you play less games and find a buddy player to learn from who is skilled at just developing a civilization in different conditions is a sensible suggestion.
Participated in: Pitboss 40 (lurked by Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 45 (lurked by Charriu and chumchu), Pitboss 63 (replaced Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 66Pitboss 69, Pitboss 74
Participating in: Pitboss 78 (lurked by GT), Pitboss 79 (lurking giraflorens), Pitboss 81 (lurking giraflorens)

Criticism welcome!

Most of my map complaints/land ect are just to potentially drum up response in my thread. This game, without any non-forest production outside of whipping.. i was lost. It sucked ass to play. With anyone else's start, they could have done their opening in at least 2 different directions if not more (from what i saw).

The start REQUIRED more than autopiloting for the first 30t. Random maps are probably not something ill play often in the future.

I used to report more often when i was happy in general, also when i got more lurker feedback so my threads arent 900 posts, with 2 being lurkers. If my quality of posts are the issue, id LOVE to hear viable feedback. Is my gameplay just super boring and not worth posting about? Well, then i just wont post.. thats kinda the feedback loop i think ive been dealt by not being non-auto pilot until 30t+ in. (check out pb48 or pb70 for how i do when the first half of the game is done by someone that really likes/is good at the early game)

Generally i like Big maps, because i at least think i can catch up a bit in the mid-late game vs games that end before rifles really become "common".

Here's how I read this:

Lurkers: You won't win many games or compete at a high level if you aren't willing to put in the micro required to compete, especially in the early game when good results have the most time to compound.

SD: What if I just don't? Maybe an opportunity will come up later. Or I'll just do something to have some fun.

My response would be... as long as you are having fun, people are willing to accept your presence in games, and you're comfortable with not being competitive... you do you I guess.

If you're having fun then keep doing that.

Context and tone is hard to convey in posts anyway, so  if it misses every now and then

So I know SD and other people here play / played Magic the gathering. There are the different types of players, Spike, Johnny, and Timmy. But there are also hybrids of those. When I played I was a Spike/Johnny hybrid. I wanted to win, I followed the meta, read articles, but I created my own decks. I don't know if they were true Johnny decks, but again they were some kind of hybrid that undoubtedly took a toll on my win percentage.

At the local level I was a spike in a non spike store. I'm sure I miss judged how to give advice even with full good intent to help. Obviously being in person made this both easier and had more room for error. Its also easy to make people feel bad even without trying. If you've ever been around a draft table a common expression is "I can't believe this card or these cards are coming around so late!". I used to say this like most magic players until the shop owner pointed out that it might make people feel bad who had no clue what was good or not and they were just there to draft and have fun. I know I want to go back and draft and I'm 100% positive I would pass some bomb uncommons now a days. That being said I really need to ditch my kids and go draft and play some magic some weekend....

Shockingly not everyone is a pure spike when they play games. AND even if you know a person wants to be a spike giving advice in a kinder more empathetic way than "stop playing, and its so easy even I one of the better players on the forum can do it" is probably called for.
