Well one thing is going to plan at least:




Next turn we take the barbarian city (and 2 free workers!)

As for my short-term fixes, I'm going to build more units to try to capture the southern barb city. Commodore is expanding slowly and cautiously, and I'm going to try and reach while I have time.

We'll try to get the capital to size 9, and that way I'll be able to spawn a Great Merch in 5 turns (Fish + Wheat + 7 specialists), as long as I have more than 25 food to work with.

The big immediate issue is I don't have enough improved tiles to work. Running caste this turn was the perfect timing, what with needing to build all the roads to move the army north. That and I'm a little light on workforce. We're making a watermill for the capital on the plains tile, and will need to connect the furs before the capital hits size 9.

So figuring out this mess...

Capital needs 1 more happy for size 9. It reaches size 9 on t36, and we'll have the fur improved t37. Our next civic swap opportunity is t38 and there we'll get into Caste. 6 merchants on t38 and then 7 on turns 39-42. Civil Service bulb t43. This is only 3 turns later than my original plan, so a little better than I first thought. Still, we're working a lot of coast tiles right now. Next turn we'll have a watermill finished. Then the turn after a plains cottage. And then 2 more cottages by t43. I think we build a settler after the work boat finishes for Matsumoto-Jo, but I'm not entirely sure.

Matsumoto-Jo takes the deer straight away. It grows to size 2 end of t37. T38 when we switch to Caste it hires 2 artists so the capital can take the deer for that 1 turn, and then just 1 more artist to pop borders t39. On t40 the work boat from the capital arrives to hook up the clam, and then Matsumoto works both Deer & Clam to grow further. Worker on the galley next turn so it can quarry the stone, finishing just in time for Matsumoto to reach size 3.

Settler out of the capital finishes t47. We'll settle south for the gold by t50. Depending on how capturing the barb city goes I could possibly see us taking the southern city before t50. Only 6 cities by 50 is no good though. La Fontaine needs to start a settler. If we start a settler there next turn it can finish by eot43. That makes me also want to push a settler out of Alhambra, which would finish t45. 8-9 cities by t50 sounds much better.

Although I could also just keep pushing out military and see how vulnerable Yuri is?

At least with Serfdom you can road for Yuri more easily?

Serfdom doesn't do anything for roads until after Hagia Sophia or Steam Power. Until then, still takes 2 worker-turns. Funny enough, I'm trying to save all my roading for non-serfdom turns.

Anyway, something went to plan this turn:




First sword lost without doing any damage, because of course it would. But after that we scored 2 hits and then 6 hits in losses, which meant our CR swords had odds the rest of the way. So at the cost of only 1 sword we took the city.

Sadly no granary or lighthouse survived. But we got over 100g! Enough for me to tentativly turn on the science.

I might go prod Yuri with my pair of horse archers. But the healthy swords are headed south to try and get to the other barb city in time.

5 turn anarchy does suck, but it will come out of revolt during my next stint in caste so we'll be able to pop borders.

Thought about this while walking the dog and I don't think attacking Yuri right now is correct.  If I attack Yuri I might burn a city, make him whip some elephants, and then either I need to keep pushing military to conquer him or keep building up military and limit my expansion with settlers.  Both of those give Commodore everything to my south for free.

So I think I want to offer Yuri fish for fish next turn and then work on building/whipping out 3 settlers over the next 10-15 turns:  settle the crab/silver east of Alhambra, and then 2 cities down by La Fontaine (either the east coast crab by the iron, or put both of them south of the city to reach for the 2nd barb city.  If I can get to 8 or 9 cities by the late 40s I'll be quite happy.

I was thinking from the earlier posts, I would hate to be Yuri and find out later that I got attacked just because my neighbor misclicked his civics...

I've been thinking about whether attacking the barb city early led to a natural follow-up of attacking Yuri since i first made the plan. I just feel that it would let Commodore have all the south easily as well as give Thoth a green light to take the other half of Yuri. So I think peace with Yuri is in my interest for now.

The world shrinks and people start having to interact with each other:




I expected this war, but I expected it to be Commodore to attack. Still, I think this is good news for me. Hopefully this diverts resources west towards scooter and lets me settle south.

Scooter asked me for open borders to let his scout through, but I declined. As I've declined everyone.

I sent Yuri the following:




Really would like a good neighbor there for the next 20 turns at least. I thought after the turn that I could have moved my healthy horse archer up to the hill north of Wolfgang Tower and then had the potential of catching Yuri unawares by roading the cow and attacking with a single HA - but between that feeling like a low-odds success, it also went against the strategy I laid out. I'm willing to give Yuri everything north of that city.

Finally, I think I should consider chopping out a trireme next:
