I'd rather HAK didn't get the marble, so he can avoid the trap of building wonders for the sake of it. I'm really impressed with how much time he's putting into the simming and how well he's justifying his decisions to Mindy, and I hope he'll keep it up.

Grimace couldn't really do anything to stop that city location though: having gone for religion first he is behind on stuff like Wheel and hence doesn't even have roads between his cities. And that city sits right in front of a choke point, on a hill with flatland in front of it. there isn't anyway to approach it, flank else where with HA. Just need to not slack on archers at the start and axes afterwards. HAK needs to head Maths>Currency>CoL anyway, Construction is along that line.

I have a worker on the way to improve the cows, but it will take 2 more turns to get there -- I had to complete the roads connecting my copper and gems first. And yes, I'm building a monument even though I have a religion because there's no guarantee religion will spread and I need the culture. It'll be whipped once the city gets to size two, followed by a granary.
Why does this city need culture?

Why did he plant that city?
See, it's stuff like that which invites getting pink dotted in the face.

I'm sorry, but how can he have done this in a Sandbox? Obviously if it's a separate landmass it's going to give ICTR, but how can you sandbox it when you don't know the full shape of the map!?

Good question. I had to look back a few pages for a picture, and it turns out it doesn't help provide the answer.
If HAK had a city on any of the tiles within a BFC (the 2 tile big square, not the normal cross) of the other landmass he could build a settler and see if there were valid setting locations within that same square city radius on the other side of the channel. If the settle city icon lit up, it would be a valid site and, therefore, on another continent as the minimum distance requirement would not apply. If the settle city icon did not light up that would indicate it was the same landmass since the minimum spacing in that case would apply. But he doesn't have existing cities in the right place to do that test so I don't know how he would have come to the conclusion. I'm also confused.
Edit: I asked HAK about it in his thread. Maybe I'll learn something today.

What are the wagers on Grimace? Everyone's been writing him off after that early religion play, but if he has iron on hand, will his push to be the first one swinging (Gallic) swords give him a renewed chance at relevance? Or will he just be an annoying distraction for his neighbours?
Regardless, I imagine the ultimate effect will be to make it all the easier for Commotay to trample the entire continent at knights.

I think Grimace is kind of doomed because of the close proximity of his neighbors. HAK's aggressive settlement didn't help him at all and even if he is able to capture or remove it Grimace will still be relatively behind others who had more land to expand into peacefully (at less cost). No matter the cause I think he's going to fall behind on expansion and be subject to consumption later by (pick a neighbor...but most likely Commodore).
Before then, though, I do hope he'll give us a good show with his swords.
