Diplomacy Master Thread- Helping Your Opponents Beat Themselves

LP just beat me to the message from GWT - but yeah, sort of a funny message. Obviously we'll just graciously ignore/avoid their comment on War Chariots - no need to tell people yet that we don't have horses.

Here's a draft to team CFC on the EP spending idea. I also thought it prudent to inform them of the WPC/German war, and who knows, maybe we'll get some info in return. If they're paying attention they already know about the war, so nothing really to lose by telling them.

Draft to CFC Wrote:Caledorn,

My teammates suggested an idea, and it sounded like a good one to me. Would you like to make an agreement to not spend EPs on each other any more than are needed to get graphs? I believe we've actually out-spent you on EPs so far (we didn't meet other targets as fast as you), but we'd be very happy if we could come to an agreement so that we can both focus our EPs elsewhere. Any thoughts? I think it would help a lot on gaining info on our neighbors more quickly.

Also, I wanted to alert you that WePlayCiv has declared war on the German team. I don't believe I heard that you guys ever made contact with them, so I thought you might be interested to hear that. WPC managed to take an undefended German city very quickly! Have you heard any other whispers of war from other civs?

On the German message - I'm apt to just tell them we already signed a NAP with WPC. There's nice ways to say that - "I'm really sorry but we already signed a NAP with them - we had no idea they would use that to attack you instead frown" or whatever. We can always leave the second half of that off since it's a bit deceptive, I'm still thinking about what seems prudent. I'm not worried though, we have a myriad of excuses (big jungle in the way, dealing with barbs, NAP, etc etc) - it's just a matter of conveying regret that we are unable to help.

yes of course the NAP excuse is even better lol
Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you.

My thoughts:
  • Don't mention our lack of horses.
  • Rely on the NAP. Don't be specific about when or how this deal was made.
  • Wish them good fortune in the conflict going forward.
  • State that we will be on our guard for similar treachery by WPC when our NAP expires.

This last point can easily be omitted, but could lead to some good feelings, however small, to offset their disappointment in our WCs not riding to the rescue.

Perhaps also say that we will soon have a trade connection to the river between us. Otherwise, I agree with Boldly's points.

Anyway, that message from the Germans was more roleplaying than their earlier.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width

CFC has met both the Germans and WPC, so they are definitely aware of the war.

Yeah the easiest response to the German team is a simple "we're sorry, we already signed a NAP with We Play Civ" and then more diplomatic niceties from there. Keep sitting on the sidelines for now and keep our options open for later.

One side comment for CivFanatics: I don't think we ever said anything else about their proposed city near the oasis. (Or maybe we did and I missed it, sorry.) We might want to tell them that we have no objections at all to a city of theirs claiming the oasis, but we have a future planned city near the corn resource past that, and we would appreciate them not settling past that. The oasis/corn area will be our planned border. Just a reminder about that (if we haven't already locked this down) would be helpful.

We'll also have a scout moving down there in about 5 turns to give us more direct information on CFC.

If we were to tell the Germans that we have no horses but ask them to not tell anyone, how confident are we that they wouldn't. One way we could potentially play this if we trust them is to use the fact that we don't have horses hooked up yet to fish for information on where horses might be located (ask something like where the Germans' horses are relative to their starting position). Even if they do tell somebody I don't necessarily see a huge risk--by the time any of our NAPs run out we would have horses connected almost assuredly, no? At that point, a little false information wouldn't hurt if someone is planning to attack us anyhow.

Not really paying attention to diplo but once we get a trade route with someone they will know whether we have horses or not.

There's no point asking the Germans or WPC for location of horse, because we're not settling up to steal their source of horses.

I say ignore the point, or blow it off with vague comments about scary hostile barbs.
