When Civ3 came out it became my obsession game to the point I quit all other gaming that I was involved in. Trying to keep a single A&A game going was a pain, as that was interfering with Civ3 time.
With Civ4 a mere 4 SGs seems like too much, and I cut it down to 3. Solo play is infrequent. I have seven A&A games going, 3 very active (a turn a day), and I am debating starting GalCiv2 for solo play.
Civ 4 is a better game, but I am not getting the addiction factor of Civ3. I don't know if is I didn't get time to recover from Civ3 burnout, or something else.

This is exactly how I am. In Civ3 I would play and play and play and the one more turn syndrome would drive me crazy. It would be 3 in the morning and I would never know it. I agree with you that Civ4 IMO is a better game but I'm also not getting that addiction edge to it. I think maybe it is because it is a harder game but I'm not really sure. I still play the game a lot and I don't get bored quickly, but when I have played for 2-3 hours I will usually take a break, check the forums here or CFC or get off the computer entirely (except on MP of course).
IMHO, Civ4 had everything that Civ3 didn't plus so much more except for the addiction factor. I think it is only for Civ3 vets though. I've heard noobs to the Civ series that say that they are up all night playing it with the OMTS. Maybe it is civ3 burnout

Hi,
LKendter Wrote:Civ 4 is a better game, but I am not getting the addiction factor of Civ3. I don't know if is I didn't get time to recover from Civ3 burnout, or something else. Same here. Civ 4 is far superior compared to Civ 3 IMHO, and yet it's not as addicting for me. Similar to VoiceOfUnreason, it's not how hard the game is that makes it interesting for me, it's exploring new concepts I find fun in. Normal games are too repetetive despite the different map scripts - general Civ burnout I guess - and I've run out of ideas how to play the game differently. But I still have a deep love for the game nonetheless, so I'm REALLY looking forward to the Epics and Adventures. I know I will be motivated to play those!

P.S.: Sirian, have you received the email I sent you last week?

Despite having played Civ4 nonstop for almost a year now, I'm still finding it extremely engaging and addictive. I recently completed two Emperor games (which I plan on posting on the website soon) that were both a blast. REALLY looking forward to more RB events opening (hopefully) in the near future.
Now what's interesting is that Kylearan and LK seem to be a bit less enthusiastic than some of our other members. As they've said, I think that there's a good chance that's connected to Civ3 burnout. I didn't touch Civ3 for over a year before working on Civ4, and I think it was a much-needed break. If I had played Civ3 straight from Jan. 2002 up to Civ4's release this past October, then gone straight into Civ4 with no break - well, I'd probably be getting a little tired of things too!

It came out in 02!! WTF?? It seems like it just came out...am i getting old??
I played civ3 for a little while, but could never get into it. 1 & 2 i loved (remember the fanatic unit??), and w/4, as i said, i'm addicted. this, perhaps, lends credence to the burnout theory??

I played Civ 4 a lot until mid February, then I stopped for a couple weeks since I lost the 'appetite' to play it. After that break my interest is as high as ever despite being restricted to smaller maps.

It's even worse than you thought - Civ3 came out in October 2001. I just didn't get a copy until the following January. In fact, if you look in our own archives here at Realms Beyond, Charis opened the first RBD succession game in December of 2001. First-ever RB usage of the weed smoking, the original dotmaps, "OMGWHTTZ!" and many other firsts.

There is no question the Civ3 burnout is part of the problem. At the end I threw the CD in the trash as the burnout was that severe.
Part of the other problem is the broken WW model. It is just *to* severe under Civ4 and there is no good government to fight it with until late in the game.
