My experiences have taught me that group ventures require some knowhow to pull off. Typically, some folks who start with you will drop off along the way. If you're lucky, you'll still have others who stick around, giving you a core group who can then succeed in attending weekly activity.
I would recommend NOT spending your grand idea on the first go-round. Get some kind of game, any kind of game, going first, and see who attends and who sticks around. When you have identified reliable attendees, then you would be in position to attempt a bold scenario. Just my two cents. Currently, I might not be among those you could count as reliable attendees. A month ago, I would have been. Maybe I will be again in another month, or at some other point in time. If that comes around, and you have built and maintained a group that plays, I'll be interested in joining in at that time. Best wishes on the new venture. ![]() - Sirian
Fortune favors the bold.
I'm curious. Gamespy turned me off of MP (I thought) for good. To me, Civ is like chess in that I'm usually thinking for long periods, planning several turns ahead.
I understood this wouldn't be so well-accepted in MP. No problem. But everyone else plays so quickly. They turn on fast combat and I end up missing that my sentry horse archer was taken out by an enemy. Next thing I know, I have four troops right next to my barely defended outskirt. Was this a consequence of Gamespy, of concurrent turns, or of MP in gerenal? I can't play that way.

Just to summarize what's been posted so far:
Dreylin - Interested, no bad dates listed regoarrarr - Interested, no bad dates listed mihau - status not clear (?), please clarify Blake - Interested, not Thursday Rex Tyrannus - status not clear (?), please clarify Game will be played without a turn timer, so MP newcomers shouldn't be afraid that they will be rushed along. There are indeed going to be a lot of units moving around, however, so be sure to watch out for that if your computer has trouble with the Large maps. I also hope that we can get everyone up and running on Teamspeak for this event, but I will post more details on that later. But this is just one of several different ideas I have in mind for co-op Multiplayer; even if this should turn into a dud, I have more plans ready to go later on. It may be a grand idea, but I've got about three others to try too. ![]()
Sorry for the obfuscation. I won't have time to commit to this, but I will be interested in learning about your games. Thanks.

a word of caution:
do you plan to play team versus AI AW game? If so, the concept is broken, so make sure you play individuals against individual AI...unless you want to end up with 400% WW and more
I have an interest in this and the times and days are not a problem. I have been playing SP just about every night between those hours for some time now.
Having said that, let me make my disclosures. I have never played MP, thus would need some guidance on set-up and any idiosyncracies in game play. I have the juice for this - six-month old custom built comp and broadband. I have never played Always War but can remedy that by playing a few games. I have never played co-op (obviously, since I have never played MP). I would not be adverse to being a DH, so to speak. If someone cannot make it one week I sit in instead of the AI. I am "game" for any type of participation as long as eveyone else understands my limitations, so to speak. Just to give you an idea of my level of experience, I am currently playing Prince/Monarch with good success at Prince and one win at Monarch. This entire concept intrigues me, but I *do not* want to sabotage the game by doing things that will seem stupid, but are really just due to inexperience with the game style. I am interested and can make the time to play this. I'd be happy to be an alternate if the roster is full. I am a MP newbie so a bit of coaching on connection, etc will be required.
At the moment, we have interest from five people:
Dreylin regoarrarr Blake (not Thursday) cynyck Ruff_Hi I think that's enough to start moving things forward. It's going to be difficult enough to coordinate things with six people; should someone drop out later or be unable to show up, we can find a substitute later. Unless anyone objects, I am setting the date for Wednesdays at 8:00pm EST. If you are in a different time zone, please make sure to figure out when that is for you. We will try to meet this upcoming Wednesday (June 28th) for the first time. We'll also spend some time the first night introducing Multiplayer newcomers into how online play works, which shouldn't be too hard with no turn timer to deal with. I will post the game name and password (for the MP lobby) we'll be using at the start of next week. What I'd like us to discuss next is what side (Axis/Allies) you'd like to play as, and which civ. I'd be happy with either side, and will play any civ. Feel free to have fun with this. ![]() Teamspeak I would really like it if we could run this game (and any future Realms Beyond Multiplayer activity) with the use of Teamspeak voice communication. I've had great success in the past using Teamspeak both for Sirian's Diablo2 Rogue team and in Civ4 competitive MP. Here is the link with more information: http://realmsbeyond.net/teamspeak.html All you need to run Teamspeak is to 1) download the software and 2) have a microphone on hand. I purchased a cheap headset for $20 about two years ago and it's worked great. Even without the microphone, you can still listen in to voice chat just by downloading the software. I'd encourage everyone interested in this game to try it. Sirian's friend ME0003 has kindly given us permission to use the server he has set up for Teamspeak. Details on how to do this are listed in the link above. (If you don't know the Realms Beyond password, you can email me at MSoracoe@hotmail.com). Try to see if you can get Teamspeak to work ahead of time so that we don't have to spend time fooling with it this upcoming Wednesday. Let me know if you're having trouble with it; fortunately, I've found the software to be relatively easy to use. That should be all for now. I'll keep watching this thread, so feel free to provide more feedback. ![]() |
