So my pictures aren't working. I played the turn. Some highlights
1) Oledavy won 4/5 EI vs. (wounded) Frigate battles @ 46% and then won a 10% battle to raze Ichabod (my intended National Park city)
2) He did abandon Stalingrad, which I retook, and named Tataningrad
3) I declared war on Shoot the Moon, killing a (n empty) galley. I also attacked an Ottoman East Indiaman @ 73% odds. Lost, of course
Other than that mostly whipping and drafting rifles. Railroad at 2 more turns EOT.

Okay obviously I can't count tiles. I lost T-hawk to Shoot. I'm sure I'd have lost it anyways but it could have held this turn. He also landed 15 rifles and 3 cats NW of Ilios.
I drafted, and then whipped a mace (the biggest thing I could dry whip).
But after EOT, what is this?
It appears that my discovering Railroad obsoleted Grenadiers, which means that maces now upgrade to Machine Guns, so my whipped mace became a whipped Machine Gun!!
Needless to say a Machine Gun is slightly more useful in this situation than a mace
Had I realized this, I'd have also whipped a mace at Nowitzkiville, where Dave dropped off a stack of 18 rifles, 3 cats and a mace....

I figured out how I lost T-hawk. Let's see if you lurkers can do it. I already closed Civ so I can't take another screenshot, so you'll have to use the one above. Shoot had his East Indiamen in a stack in a land fort under the military tradition icon (5N1W of Ilios). They moved to the tile 1W of the gems (you can see them right off the edge off the left of the screen).
They apparently moved S-S-SW-W-SW (5 moves).
a) Shoot does not have OB with Nospace (purple)
b) Shoot did not declare on OB.
c) The EIs in question were definitely in that fort last turn (so they didn't come from somewhere else)
d) Shoot does not have circumnavigation
e) The EIs are not Nav 1.
So how'd they do it?

That's a good guess, though I don't know if you could risk them popping out the wrong side. Wrong though.
To follow up on our IMs,
f) The fort is still there
g) No Refrigeration
h) He's not the Vikings

i) They're East Indiamen. One of the several upgrades for East Indiamen (beyond +2 strength and +1 Cargo) is the ability to peacefully explore rival territory. They did NOT make 5 moves, but only 4 (S-SW-SW-SW).

So, how quickly do you get machine guns out now? From experience, even with airship bombing, once MGs come around all amphibious assaults grind to a halt with a sickening crunch sound until marines.

Well I'll be getting them out as soon as possible. But I now have 2 separate stacks of ~15-20 rifles on opposite sides of my lands. So.... that's going to be tough to deal with.
Plus I need to hurry on up to Combustion
