And how deadset are you about the worker-steal?

Hmm.. that's a good point. Not set at all, I often didn't steal Workers in test games, and still was able to get by fine

My main problem about this potential alliance is, it's expensive to maintain, and money is difficult to get in MP. In the early game I can get influence by patrolling their borders and farming barbs, but barbs won't last forever. And right now I don't have the military or plans to get it, I intend to concentrate on Settlers and TGLib for the next 20 turns

I still need to see what I find in NE, my Scout only just got there, and I'm sure there must be another luxury or two somewhere

Hm I have never used any of the cheesy tactics so no selling things to the AI and still I usually have little problems to get enough money for a little friend(or 2).

I always have problems with gold. But I usually go for a very late Currency, and army maintenance eats my gold reserves - I'm almost broke by the time first Markets go up

I've been reading a lot on Civ5 multiplayer since the game started, to be aware of what to expect, and came across German Landsknecht push. Wow. I guess with our inexperience with Civ5, we didn't realise how ridiculous the Germany UU is

Landsknecht replaces Pikeman and has the same strength, but costs 100% less. So Germany gets a unit which has the strength of a Swordsman, the cost of a Warrior, counters mounted units, and doesn't require a resource. And is available at Civil Service, so it is on the tech towards Education, unlike Swordsman which requires Iron Working

With this push you can kill at least one or two opponents (if not everyone) and still have key economic techs earlier than those who go for IW (those who don't just die, because they don't have units remotely close to LKs)

I'm certainly glad there's no Germany in this game

Unit stats (hammers for normal speed)
Warrior - 6 str, 40 hammers
Landsknecht - 10 str, 45 hammers
Pikeman - 10 str, 90 hammers
Swordsman - 11 str, 75 hammers, requires iron

I know CiV isn't balanced but things like that do make me chuckle.

Yeah, this once again shows how much Firaxis care about multiplayer in Civ5. As if we needed another evidence when 2 years after release the game still

* doesn't have proper PBEM support
* doesn't allow to use custom maps in MP
* doesn't have an option for sequential turns
* doesn't have an option for always war
etc. etc. etc.

50% less. If it cost 100% less, it would be free.
The Pikeman does cost 100% more than the Landknecht though.

The Warrior finished in Boeing and killed the barb who was harassing me. I decided to start working on TGLib without building Settlers for now

In Civ5 in its current state, it is important to think what will be gained by founding another city. If we compare founding a new city with growing an existing one by 1 pop, the disadvantage of the new city is obvious: it gives 3 extra unhappiness. What can be gained by a new city:

* Access to a new luxury
* Access to extra hammers
* Faster pop growth (you need less food to grow 2 cities from size 1 to 2 than to grow 1 city from size 3 to 4) -> better research rate

Now, I obviously cannot get a new luxury, because I didn't find one. And I will probably need to found another city on my 3 luxuries to get iron. England can survive without horses, but iron is required for Ships of the Line, so it's a key resource. So taking a city without extra luxuries without knowing where iron is can leave me in a situation when I cannot get access to iron without massive unhappiness penalties

Also, in high level games, the normal timing for TGLib is T25. In this game, even if I start it now, I will get it after T30. It is a key wonder for me if I want to get 2 great scientists to bulb Astronomy and Navigation, so I can't lose it. There's no competition for now, as I'm still the only one with Writing, but I don't want to risk it

So the plan is to get TGLib, then grow Boeing to size 8. Fish with a Lighthouse, cow and the city tile give me 10 food, add a Granary and that's 12 food. 2 citizens will work food tiles, 4 will be free to production tiles (0/3/0 mines). Plus 2 citizens can work food-neutral stone tiles (2/2/0 when improved). I should be in good shape
