Sunrise the top 4 seeds consisted of the top 4 of the previous IPL tournament, the 5-8 seeds were from the qualifiers. Since the qualifiers were played on NA servers, pretty much every EU team was eliminated by a NA team.
Tyrmith, there was a tournament Curse were playing in at the same time as the qualifiers but they still got to top 4 then forfeited their semi final after qualifying. Fnatic, M5, SK and CLG eu were all in the qualifiers so I'm not sure which big teams were missing?

One really dumb feature of the broadcast is that although the spectator mode is 3 minutes delayed the video of the teams playing is live. The players' reaction end up giving away when the game ends and who wins. This ruined the end of the very close and entertaining TSM vs Curse Game 2.
Day One Results
Counter Logic defeated Against All Authority 2-0 Curse Gaming defeated Epik Gaming 2-0 Team Solomid defeated v8 Esports 2-0 Dignitas defeated Mono 2-1 Team Solomid defeated Curse Gaming 2-0 Dignitas defeated Counter Logic 2-1 Dignitas were the comeback kids, dropping the first game in each series and falling far behind in all of their wins, only to pull things out in the end, usually in dramatic fashion. Their team of three supports + Kogmaw did surprisingly well (Lulu top, Soraka mid, Kog and support bottom). CLG's refusal to ban Kogmaw in the final game of their series was baffling to me. Great day of games. Lots of comebacks, action, and interesting team comps. A few thoughts:
It looks like Kog'Maw is the OP champ for this tourney. He's been in most (all?) of the comebacks and if games get to the 30 minute mark he just destroys the enemy team. Curse even ran an anti-Kog comp (Leona-Nocturne to blow him up straight away) against TSM which worked for a while. But then Chaox got some farm and that was gg. One of the big questions going forward is if teams start banning him or continue to think they can beat it. AP Mid battle mage Soraka is viable, at least in Scarra's hands. So is Voyboy's top lane Lulu.  Dyrus didn't play great but TSM looks much better coordinated as a team, both in fighting and in objectives. Aggressive counterjungle is still the dominant meta. The most interesting specific play was V8's countercounter jungle against TSM. They lvl 1 invaded at TSM's blue but knew that TSM was going to counter by going to their own wolves/blue so they double backed, just skirting the ward they know Xpecial likes to place and killed both Dyrus and Regi.
I took a nap for TSM vs V8 so missed that. Soraka mid isn't anything new, well outside of solo cue it is I guess. I know Scarra hates whenever Scyx runs it against him. I remember HotShot playing around with it in solo que ages ago considering it insanely broken. He played it alot like Zombie Karthus, would just farm nonstop. At one point was 0-8 but just reached a point where he was so farmed a three man gank had to run away to avoid dying to Starcall. Not banning it game three was the biggest surprise to me.
In there OGN games CLG used Shen ulti on invisible Vayne for a gank. Found that very cool, now I'd like to see a time take it step further and throw Shen in with Global Comp (TF, Noct) just seems unfair if done well. |
