Huayana Capac of the Ottomans (IND, FIN, Agriculture, The Wheel, Hammam, Janissary)

Like Commodore, yuri picked his first game to "replay." HC of the Ottomans is unquestionably the strongest combo here with the strong FIN trait as well as the long IND player to get a leg up on wonders/forges. The Ottomans are a strong Civ as well, with the 2nd best starting traits and a ok UB and mediocre UU made better by the fact that the vanilla versions of both are crap, so they're turning something worthless, worthwhile. It goes without saying we can expect a long game strategy here, though I always expect the IND civ to land Oracle. Yuri used Fin/Colossus coast in his first game to stay competitive and it is certainly a possibility here, though we're not expecting a ton of water. Anyway, good stuff all around, even if it doesn't synergize especially well.

Yuri has improved a lot over the course of time - starting out as a middling player and developing into a competitor. While he's still prone to the occasional brain cramp that effects almost all of us non-elite players, he's also managed to be competitive in every game he's played. He's not very aggressive, however, and this has cost him several times before. He's also going to be at a diplomatic disadvantage right from the start - we all know he has the strongest combo. I think in a relatively equal field, he has to be considered the favorite.

Player skill:bowbowbow
Leader/Civ strength: yikesyikesyikesyikesyikes
Aggressiveness: hammer
Intangibles: smokesmokesmoke
PYFT rating: jivejivejivejive

Exploitable weakness: Waits too long to go offensive, easy to paint as the biggest threat.
Biggest fear: He sweeps the wonders and races out in front at a canter.
Pre-game prediction: Winner

Mistkebab! [Mist and Ichabod] (Many FFH PBEMs; PB5 (Mist), PB7 (Ichabod))

Starring as...

Victoria of Byzantium (FIN, IMP, Mysticism, The Wheel, Hippodrome, Cataphract)

Vicky of Byz was a much better choice in the game this came from than here, but in fairness they didn't have any other options. Vicky is midgrade FIN leader with the often self-destructive IMP trait. The dichotomy here is that you have a trait that wants a fast start - IMP with a Civ with terrible start techs and a second trait that benefits little in the early game. Obviously, all that matters not if they're in the game at Guilds - Cataphracts are unstoppable if used correctly at tech parity. We've very rarely seen this accomplished, however.

Mist is a crazy schemer. Ichabod is a competent game-manager. Neither has much competitive BTS experience. I expect a crazy scheme and decent micro. Realistically, this probably wasn't the ideal game for them to come into - though I expect Ichabod to run the show most of the time. They're definitely the wild card here, we just don't have enough to go on.

Mistkebab snapshot:

Player skill:bowbowbow
Leader/Civ strength: yikesyikes
Aggressiveness: hammerhammerhammer
Intangibles: smoke
PYFT rating: jivejivejive

Exploitable weakness: Green to base Civ MP. Likely to have a slow start.
Biggest fear: They stay in the game until Guilds and are our neighbor.
Pre-game prediction: 5th place.

Gaspar Wrote:It occurs to me its going to be much harder to gin up dedlurkers with Us, Commodore and Dave in the game. The standard of play might be mediocre but the threads will be spectacularly well-updated. Nonetheless, we shall try. I guarantee NH & my antics will be more interesting than whatever Dave and/or Commodore come up with talking to themselves. They'll probably both report slightly more meticulously than I, however.
Yes, I considered dedlurking, but the temptation of being a global lurker with this crew was just too much.

Quote:In the first instance of blatant post-boosting, we'd like to appeal to the lurkers for theme ideas. Things bandied about thus far:

Tribute (Naming stuff after great events in RB history - The Razing of Mason, the PB6 CV, the ill-fated Praetorian World Tour, etc.)
Great Duos/Pairings (See first post, Chocolate & Peanut Butter, etc.)
Famous Second Acts (Empire Strikes Back, Bruce Jenner, New Coke etc.)

We are of course open to other suggestions. smile

You've already partially got this, but - perhaps bad events from the other players' games? Ideally from the very game that prompted their leader to be available?

you could go completely meta and use "naming themes"

I came into this thread thinking along the same lines as Mardoc, but by post #7 you guys had me won over as a ded-lurker. Although i tend to end up taking over games i start ded-lurking in so maybe i'm bad luck.

Btw- i hope we can play against each other again in the future Gaspar because i love your pre-game opponent analysis thumbsup

Boooo. Hisss.

This has potential. Though with 2 leaders from PBEM19 you can only find so many ways to mention Seven owning everybody.

I think this has been suggested before. It has some comedic value, but it might peter out quickly.

heart Happy to have you on-board, pindicator. I'd say its highly unlikely that both NH and I will disappear, though it is always possible that the game becomes available because I murder NH and get arrested. wink

We welcome any and all lurkers. smile

I thought you retired after 29 Gaspar. Glad to see you didn't though, your pregame thoughts are easily one of my top favourite reads on RB thumbsup
