Anglo-French Wars
France and Spain were at war for 100 years between 1492 and now. England and France for 88 years. :D The rivalry between France and Spain in the days of Francis I and Karel V, when France was basically surrounded by Spanish territories, was big.

hmm, well. I think of the two as natural allies - probably from the times they were, like the Napoleonic wars and the Spanish succession wars. thanks for correcting me ;p
Regardless, Spain can't really afford a land war with France, unless it is early and opportunistic, and even then wouldn't really benefit from it. So ally with her .

Noted.
Yeah, it is a good bit slower, but that's fine for me, it's more of a challenge to see if I can still defeat it. Especially since it's not slow in a bad game design way, just not as speedy as I'm used to with Civ.

Hearts of Iron II has quite a bit of a faster pace (it starts in 1936 and runs until the 60s). World conquest is even possible for several of the countries (Germany, Russia, USA, maybe Japan or communist China). Its not really possible in UEIII, although it wouldn't really make sense historically if it was.

Really? That sounds pretty fun, getting to play around the World War age. I might have to try that game at some point as well.

there's a HOI III that was released a few years ago, but I'm not a big fan. I guess you can make up your own mind though .

It certainly is possible. I've read a few AAR's of complete world domination in EU III. Perhaps most notably, one for Leinster, starting as a OPM.

For most of European history, England was an irrelevant sideshow. It became a big deal after first Spain and then France had their turns at being the big dog in Europe.
Even the raw "Time at war" numbers that Maniac has posted don't tell the full story. Most Anglo-French and Anglo-Spanish wars saw relatively few troops committed, while the Franco-Spanish conflicts were often gigantic wars that would shape the fate of Europe.
Spain certainly wasn't a "Natural ally" of France, so much as a bitter rival and then an unwilling victim. Both of the conflicts you cite as them being allies(War of Spanish Succession, Peninsular Wars) actually basically revolve around French attempts to completely take over Spain!

that must have been before the expansions. With HTTT, at least, you get a massive "overexpansion" penalty if you have more than certain amount of non-core provinces after you eclipse 100 or so provinces yourself - it doesn't go away until those provinces become cores (50 years) - and it's very hard to expand much while you have it (revolts everywhere).
Of course, if releasing vassals is allowed, it becomes more feasible. Lower difficulty levels help too. I imagine he purposely went over the infamy limit to get neighbors to DOW on him?

Everyone in Europe has been at war with everyone else at some point.

Hah, glad that we have that established. :D
Well from this thread I haven't gotten much feedback, but I've had a few people tell me over IM that they'd be interested in seeing a showcase, so I'll probably start one off in the next few days. Anyone have a favorite European nation/duchy/etc from between 1399-1450?
