Official blockade proposal: No blockades unless it's a modern ship, modern behind defined as > 8 strength and > 4 movement. I'm in favor obviously. Other opinions?

Edit: yeah barbs off probably

Obviously I'm not playing, but my experience with both ancient (pbem39) and modern (pbem19) naval combat makes me think that blockades work fine, and in particular, ancient blockades are actually more "fair" than modern ones. Enacting a blockade before galleons requires you to build ships you wouldn't otherwise build, and often isn't even worth the effort, since no one wants to be working coast tiles back then anyway. On top of that, caravels are the best unit pre-galleons, and they can't blockade.

The most (only?) complaining I recall happening in a game that actually allowed blockades, was in PB6, between Team 1 and Team 3. And that was actually quite interesting for the lurkers. It seemed to me that the blockades added more strategy and naval action to the game, at the cost of frustrating some of the players. But that's their problem, IMO. wink

Why? What is your time zone? I can play NYC 6am to 7am and 7pm to midnight.

Can someone explain how that works?

And what is allowed with AI Diplo and what isn't. Are you allowed to type anything in the trade box? Can you type an AI reply such as 'over my dead body'?

Oh - new smilies! :dancing5::dancing5:

AI Diplo = no text and don't try to spell out words with city names/resources. And I assume no attempts at morse code. wink

2x Last to First means that after the turn order is generated, the person who has his turn last picks first, then the second to last, etc. After everyone has picked once, the picking processes repeats in the same order. If you end up last in the turn order, for example, you would end up picking first in each round.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Let's get the turn order randomized!
