BaII cleans up THH's mess [spoilers!]

As far as I know the greens are going with all the same settings as the vets. At least, I hope that's what we're doing, because there's a whole lot of stuff they've discussed that we haven't, and I'd rather just start the game!

I just ran the sim again on Quick, and it works out the same in terms of timings (as is to be expected), just on different turn numbers, and the tiles have to be jiggled a little differently on the turns before the city grows. I don't feel like going through and posting a whack-load of new pictures, though. Maybe later if we need to discuss these first few turns further (up to the first worker and Bronze Working - after that, we'll definitely need to discuss!).

Picks so far:

Hydra - Spain
Fintourist - Hannibal
Viqsi - Suryavarman
Azza - Victoria
Sareln - Rome

No one has picked an Industrious leader yet, though Sareln hasn't picked his leader yet. Shall we go for Roosevelt, or stick with Ahsoka?

could make a good case both for taking FDR and Asoka ... it depends on if you intend to build a lot of wonders (which could be a trap if you aren't focused ...) and i somewhat doubt that Sareln would gimp himself and us by taking it as well (one way or another) if you do ... i'm leaning towards Asoka, but given that its you that's going to play you make the choice

I'm going to pick Ashoka. As I said in my first post, I don't want to chase wonders too heavily; also, Spiritual will allow me to run civics other than Slavery and Nationhood with less fear in case of a sudden attack.

Would you look at that? Last pick was indeed an Industrious leader:

Sareln playing Bismarck of Rome
Azza playing Victoria of England
Viqsi playing Suryavarman of Carthage
Fintourist playing Hannibal of the Ottomans
Hydra playing Ashoka of Spain

Sareln looks to be aiming to take the initiative in the early game with a fast start followed up by Praetorians. Let's hope we're not next to him! Azza and Fintourist are probably both looking to do the same thing we are, tech up to an advantage and finish it with their unique unit. Fintourist's comes earlier, but is much less strong; Azza's beats ours and other gunpowder units, so we may want to think about dealing with him before it reaches that point. Viqsi looks to be going for steady consistency throughout the game.

Sian, you've (of course) been around here longer than I have; what should we expect from those who have played games before?

as for Sareln in the games i've seen him in (i admit that i haven't specificly tried reading up on him) he's most often playing mods and/or as secondary player, his choices are a bit sitting between two chairs ... Rome suggests that he's going to rush someone with Preats (although its not nearly as scary as it sounds ... Axe's works resoundably well against it, if he's a neighbour just build a few more axes and focus them on his border) on the other hand Bishy suggests that he's going to aim at big improved cities and turtle for getting wonders ... Oracling Metal Working (early cheap forges), getting Pyramids/Great Lighthouse and then Mausuleum of Mausulous + Taj Mahal would be a reasonable guess for his aims (specially the last is scarily strong)

Azza ... well ... i've somewhat followed his two other PBEMs (being a player in one, being the mapmaker in the other) ... in 33 he had some issues with balancing his cities, getting to big an army, and having issues keeping up with GNP ... and while having a better balance in 37 he still made some odd choices (including an badly executed attack on the top player).

That said ... Redcoats doesn't have bonuses against our Conquestiadors, at least none that Vanilla Riflemen doesn't have ... true, they're strong against most stuff (they still die to Siege colleteral though) but i've rarely seen them used great

been playing a bit around with the save

map is a 50x50 toroid = 2500 tiles in total ...

of those only 899 is land tiles, which means that the map aren't a complete mirror placed side by side by some variant

two people (Fintourist and Azza) have settled, one of them (my moneys on Azza) settled next to fish (given roughly even starting spots) ... the one settled next to fish works fish (reason why i believe its Azza since fintourist doesn't have fishing), while Fintourist works corn ...

There is coast 2n3w of the settler

By settling on fish our second city would likely be somewhere to the north, sharing the corn, since there's additional grassland riverside up there

All good to know; thank you, Sian. Is the tile assignment information from the demographics screen?

Time for my T0 report:

Here is the starting position again:

I moved the Scout 1S (so as to reveal any hill tile 2SW of that position), then 1E:

As discussed, I moved the Settler 1S and founded Armenelos next to the Fish; it will work that tile till just before it hits size 2, building a Work Boat all the while.

Here is the demographics screen at the end of the turn:

Short report for turn 0, as is to be expected. By the way, if lurkers are allowed to post such comments in these threads, I would appreciate any sort of feedback on my reports (their frequency, length, content, number of images, etc.). I hope that was interesting enough for turn 1!

Not much to say with these early turns...although a note: Civ is a good rational game, starting with Turn 0.

Oh dear, I forgot about that; I'll go change it. By the way, I think I was editing my post as you typed that - I added a request for any feedback on the quality of my reports, if you ever feel like giving any. Thanks for always popping in, Commodore!
