Diplomacy Master Thread- Helping Your Opponents Beat Themselves

It's okay to offer assistance of course, but we shouldn't just presume that they'll appreciate unprompted translations.

It very much depends on context and culture. Since civforum.de is a forum made up of people who wants to discuss Civ in German (and thus largely has made the choice to discuss Civ in German) a greeting in good German is likely to be well thought of.

The situation in Sweden (and Norway is likely similar) is different, and these things change. The Netherlands used to be more like Swedish with regards to the demand for translations from English, but at least from the software localisation front it's moving in the direction of Germany or France, in that there is a demand for proper localisation.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width

I'd say we let the teams decide whether or not they'd prefer messages in their native languages, rather than have us make that decision for them.

Coming back to what we know about the Germans:
During game setup, there were comments in their forums indicating that they did not exactly hold Lord Parkin in high regard.
Apparently something to do with a game they were in as well as LP.
Not sure what happened there, maybe LP can shed some light on it.

No reply yet from the Germans? Odd. Did we tell CFC we met the Germans? We probably should straight away, before they see our new ep spending.

Yep, I told CFC immediately. And no, no response from them yet. Not sure if there's another avenue to contact them to make sure they got it?

Aaaand we got a message from Caledorn.

From CFC Wrote:scooter/RB,

Congratulations on founding Hinduism and completing the Stonehenge. We hope your forums are back up and running smoothly, and that your team is fully back in business again.

Luckily, we can report that our relationships with WPC have been established smoothly, considering their scary UU that can be built without the need for any strategic resource. They have shared some info about their surroundings, which seems similar to ours based on their descriptions.

We met Team Spanish Apolyton on turn 54, and they are located east of our lands, so quite a distance away for you to travel if you want to go eastwards to meet them. As we do not yet know how the toroidal map wraps, they may be the team that are located west of you though, so we hope you can scout westwards of your lands to see what team may be located there. If you actively want to scout for the Spanish team, you should go a bit south of where we met you (like 8 tiles or so) and directly west.

We have also met a warrior from Team UCiv in the middle of the wilderness this turn (T56) - we will get back to you as soon as we have gotten in touch with them and know more.

Caledorn, on behalf of Team CFC

Summary:
1) They have met UniversCiv as well. They have now met us, WePlayCiv, Spanish Apolyton, and UniversCiv in that order.
2) Spanish Apolyton is east of their land. Given that CFC is already southeast of us, CFC theorizes we might actually get to meet the Apolyton team quicker if we head west (or slightly south and then west)

Looks good. I'm going to wait a couple days to respond to see if we can hear anything from the German team. I chatted around with Caledorn a bit. Didn't really go anywhere - he's a bit slow responding because I think he frequently chats from his phone. Anyways, he asked what the map looks like with Stonehenge. He said their map theorizers think it's laid out like this:

CFC Wrote:Caledorn: It seems that we are played out as a chessboard perhaps, with a team on A1, C3, E5, A5, E1 and so forth

This sounds about right given what they've told us. I told him we appear to be in the southwest quadrant of the map, close-ish to the equator. Then:

CFC Wrote:Caledorn: Well, that's definitely something I'm sure the map theorizers will appreciate to hear. With the chessboard theory that seems likely, we only need to know whether SPAP is your western neighbors now and we have the map figured out I think?
scooter: yeah that would be good. maybe between our teams we can plot out a rough placement of where everybody is in paint or something
Caledorn: I was thinking something along the same lines. smile

SPAP = Spanish Apolyton. So that's where we are. If we can hear back from the German team soon, I think we can confirm their location, and we should have a pretty good map of where everyone is.

Finally, he said the language barrier has been a real issue with the Spanish Apolyton team - he's had trouble making any progress. He seems pretty concerned about Boudica Impis, but not necessarily worried. They stumbled upon the Zulu city and not vice versa, so that gives them a bit of breathing room for the moment. He also reiterated how happy he was that they have an agreement with us so that they don't have to worry about us too.

Ok, think I covered it all. Figured this was preferable to a chat log.
