None of the underlying mechanics of the game were changed. The strategy is exactly as one-dimensional as ever: connect resources -> sell resources for gold -> spend gold on rush buys / city states / research agreements -> win game.

I'd love to write an updated article explaining the foolishness of these arguments, but then I'd have to play Civ5 again. Ugh. So no deal.

I agree, but I think Civ IV single player is pretty broken too. Get trade bait -> tech trading party -> Liberalism -> military tech -> win game. Do you think Civ V is no good for multiplayer too?

I read the one Multiplayer games that Realms Beyond did here, and no, Civ5 didn't look very appealing. I don't agree either that Civ4 single player is simple or broken. We were able to get seven years (and counting) worth of single player events out of Civ4's engine. Strategy games wish they could be so lucky.

Why so many continued attempts at revisionism regarding Civ5? I'm willing to grant people their own opinions, but if they game is supposedly so good, why aren't more of you playing it? Come on, show me some of those Civ5 reports. Show me your Civ5 enthusiasm. T-Hawk was about the only one here who did so, and he got tired of the game after half a dozen games, largely because the game had been figured out and there was little more to discover.

Seriously, this isn't complicated. Civ4 is a very deep strategic game. Civ5 is not. If you don't agree, then prove me wrong. Show me where the depth and nuance exists in Civ5's gameplay. I've been waiting since it launched, and I'm still waiting.

Is it possible for a mod to cut all the civ 5 bashing in this thread and move it over to the civ 5 thread and leave this thread as a suggestion thread for worthwhile game reports to read as was the intention please?

I thought you meant Civ 5 mod for a few seconds there...

Threadjacking is a proud and time-honoured tradition on RB, no need for mod action IMO smile As for Civ4 being shit without BtS, I don't think that's the case. A quick look at wikipedia lists these BtS features:

Quote:Corporations: A new gameplay feature, similar to the ‘religion’ feature, allows players to create corporations and spread them throughout the world. Each corporation provides benefits in exchange for certain resources.
Espionage: Now available much earlier in the game, this expanded feature offers players many new ways to spy on opponents, stir citizen unrest and defend their government’s secrets.
Random Events: New random events such as natural disasters, pleas for help, or demands from their citizens will challenge players to overcome obstacles in order for their civilizations to prosper. Random events can also be beneficial, such as scientific breakthroughs or incidents that improve relations with a neighbor.
Advanced Starts: When starting the game in any era, this new option allows the player to purchase components for an already-developed nation.
Expanded Space Victory: Obtaining a space victory is now more difficult and requires more strategy and decision-making than before.
Expanded Diplomatic Victory: It is now possible to achieve diplomatic victories much earlier in the game, and to defy resolutions.
New Game Options: Beyond the Sword offers various new game options, like new world-types and the option to play any leader-civilization combination.
Of those, most are not popular. But for the most part they can be turned off. None of them seek to fix fundamental problems with the game. Warlords offers more, but still nothing critical. It adds extra features to an already good product.

The vanilla patches made a number of good changes, but still mostly just number tweaking. Reduced base hammers from chopping and further reductions for distant forests, units rebalanced, etc. So I disagree with the reasoning that "Civ4 had patches and expansions too!!".

It's the AI. It got reworked majorly by Blake, and Firaxis brought that work into one of the Warlords patches. Without this improved AI, Civ 4 single player would indeed be much less compelling. Probably not quite as stale as Civ 5, but we probably wouldn't still be playing Civ 4 SP events now without that AI work.

Seems at start of Nov patch came out that finally released the DLL source code for Civ 5 (not sure if posted here since not much Civ 5 content) so possible might be seeing some better mods and AI making use of that once people get familiar.

So going back to the original purpose of this thread, I thought Mostly_Harmless's thread in PBEM1 was really interesting. He got stuck with one of the absolute worst leaders from the random draw, but still stuck it out, and did some really interesting strategies to fight a modern era war despite a huge disadvantage.

Obviously the best read was the one regoarrarr lost on the last turn to Commando Modern Armor. Pure, pure joy smile.

Second place is Cuban Isolationists.
