Sian, here is the view from the hill:
We could settle Copper/Rice/Wheat, but all would be second ring, or Copper/Wheat, and lose the Rice.

Dry Rice is fairly useless ...
I'm staying with my previous thought of settling 1e of Copper
... and its Corn, not Wheat
as for warrior ... move him clockwise coasthugging

what i was more interested in by sending the warrior to that hill was if there were any seafood that could be aluring.

Sian: I whipped! I whipped! I did it!
I switched to Slavery (Spiritual!) and whipped the Settler at 75 hammers. I believe this was the first turn I could one-pop whip, so I haven't done anything inefficient (by waiting a turn for no reason). This shaves two turns off the Settler build, and with overflow gets a Warrior out in one turn. It will take two turns for the city to regrow (with exactly the right amount of food). I sent the Worker 1S to chop again. I guess I'll have to put a turn into something else before starting on another Settler (or Worker - which do you think is more important?), probably another Warrior. Meanwhile, as you can see in the top-right of that picture, I discovered Gems up by the Rice. Hopefully there's seafood around there somewhere.
Anyway, what do you think? Was this a good whip, or should I have just let the city be - or whipped earlier? I know people often prefer to two-pop whip for happiness and/or growth reasons, but neither of those applied here. I think this is a good omen for my future play, though; perhaps I will learn to whip after all.

Okay, the Settler came out and I started sending him north. The scouting Warrior still hasn't found any seafood! The Scout did find Fintourist:
I can probably sneak around that Warrior. Should I?
At the end of the turn, Animal Husbandry came in, revealing Horses:
That looks like a juicy spot over there to me - just food-light. Is every one of our cities going to have to share that same Corn?!
Anyway, what to research next? The Wheel, probably, to hook up the Copper.

Found some Fish in an awkward location:
Next turn, our second city will be founded. At this point we will have the option of working the Corn with either city. What do you suggest, Sian? Armenelos will be building a Settler, unless you object. I'm not sure what to build in the new city. Often I build Workers right off the bat in new cities, but that might not be optimal. What do you suggest?
The one-turn Warrior finished in Armenelos; I'm thinking of sending him up to the chokepoint to our region at the hub in the north. Animal Husbandry also came in; I selected The Wheel as the next tech. I hope that's okay.

new city should probably grow on the corn building a warrior (in lack of better)
Capital should grow working Fish and sheep (pasture it), waiting till size 4 before building a worker, followed by a settler (which should be whipped asap, with the capital going down to size2) and by that point you 'should' have Pottery to build Graneries to make Whipping even stronger
Those fishes are obviously a marker saying "Settle on Plain hill" ...
actually i'd consider settling ON the rice ... corn (by that point in time your second city should have clams, and dry rice is a pretty crappy tile all things considered), horses and grassland gems (IMHO the best happiness resource combo in the game), and then consider weather you should follow the blunt suggestion of settling on PH or if not 1s is better (Theres still some fog to be discovered to figure it out)

Just to clarify, what did you mean when you said "by that point in time your second city should have clams"? They're outside of the second city's BFC, unless I give up the Corn.
