I wouldn't want to start putting beakers into nationalism before we have a decent backup lib target lined up. And I'm not sure what that backup lib target could be, other than astronomy. So really, this means we'd need to get astronomy before nationalism and Taj.

I'm kind of leaning towards just liberating nationalism but we don't need to decide yet.

Military Tradition is always good backup assuming we need to fight. Cuirassiers are good units as well as Cavs a bit later.

No-one has Philosophy or Paper. So we're not in a close race for Liberalism yet, and there's some obvious points at which we need to start being concerned.

As to what to do - it's one of those questions where there's not a right answer, isn't it?

Liberate Astro; Tech Nationalism after = risk of losing Taj? (also gap in Golden Age)
Liberate Astro; Tech Nationalism first = risk of losing Liberalism, or taking poor target
Liberate Nationalism; Tech Astro by hand = slow to Astro & probably beaten there by Gillette

The original plan (Liberate Nationalism) feels least risk, but I don't know if it's too conservative smile

If I'm reading this correctly, then:

Neither engineering nor liberalism can be bulbed into until after iron working -> compass -> optics -> astronomy.

Paper -> education -> printing press does take precedence over that line, as does chemistry after printing press.

So it is possible to bulb printing press, research gunpowder, and bulb chemistry. It is also possible to bulb printing press, and later bulb astronomy, as long as we avoid gunpowder.

If Gillette want to bulb astronomy, they still have to get paper and education first. And also printing press, since they already have machinery. So I don't think they are planning to bulb their way to astronomy.

Please correct my mistakes... I'm sure I made some.

I didn't find mistakes. After Astro, Scientific Method takes precedence so we can't take it, if we want to bulb Chemistry. In some of my previous messages I didn't take into account that Printing Press is also high on the list so we need to get it done before we can bulb Astro. I think we should focus our intrest to 3 main alternatives all the others jeopardize our Liberalism i.e.
1) Original Nationalism plan. We could spare Scientists for bulbing instead of settling. 1 for Education, 1 for PP and 1 for Astro. Techs could be altered little i.e. instead or Archery we could take IW unless it delays Liberalism to T133
2) Astro plan 1 - Nationalism before Liberalism. As a backup plan we can liberate MilTra. This might require us to not settle Scientists until we're sure to get Astro.
3) Astro plan 2 - Nationalism after Liberalism. Main weakness is very much delayed Taj

After consideration I think our original plan is still the best.

I would stick with archery because I fear liberalism can be pretty tight.

The big question that needs to be answered this turn is whether or not to settle the great spy. Looking at the GPP plan again, the second golden age will be completed on T148ish, and HN will have around 700/900 GPPs at that point. Outside of pacifism and GA, it can make 45 GPPs/turn with 5 specialists. So another GP would likely spawn T152ish, and then it would be another 22 turns for the 1000 GP to spawn. So if we save the great spy, we can probably couple it with another GP around T152 and start our third golden age then. Otherwise, we might have to wait until economics.

Given all the nice things we can use great scientists for, saving the great spy may be the way to go?

I guess we'll just have to run the slider if we really want an EP boost at some point.

Just to waffle a bit more... a settled spy really isn't bad compared to a settled scientist. It's +6 beakers +12 EPs versus +9 beakers +1 hammer. So the main issue is if we end up in a situation where we'd want to bulb something with a great scientist, but have to save him for a GA instead. But after the education bulb, the only bulb we are really certain that we want to do is the PP bulb, and we will assuredly get at least one more scientist for that.

So I guess I just talked myself back into settling the spy. smile

yeah - and later investing on Mauseloum+Intelligence agency in this one city we can generate respectable number of EPs without further hammer insvetments on other cities. We can also try to get Economics Merchant or Communism Spy to launch another Golden age.

OK, settling the spy seems good then. We know settling the spy is an OK option, we don't know what we might want it for later. So settling is the easy choice, really.
I have to run.

About the filler cities, they should go 5S of Ramune and 4W of the capital. I think 5S of Ramune is the best one, as it can get a chop for a granary and borrow the sheep from BM. At size 8 it could work four farms, two grass mines, and two plains mines. Borrowing the sheep isn't so bad, since those filler citizens will cost a lot less food to grow than the ones in BM.

The one in the south needs to borrow food from the capital to get started, which is less optimal. I would make that our last mainland city to be settled.
