Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

I bring bad tidings -

Mackoti and I ran into a problem and can't find a good solution to keep the game going as it was. Basically a bug caused an extremely unfair situation for Mackoti, but reloading to fix it would be extremely unfair for me. In both cases, the level of unfairness is enough to make that player not want to play on as game would become a painful chore for them. I discussed this at length with Mackoti, and aside from both being incredibly annoyed at the bug for putting us in this situation and ruining our fun, we decided our preference is to end this game, if others are willing, or seek a sub or two if people prefer to play on.

I'm going to explain the situation because I don't think it's likely this can be resolved without it. My apologies for the very mild spoilers.

Situation is roughly like this: I razed mackoti's 3rd best city (let's say) out of the fog, with my army he didn't know the composition, location, or intent of before the razing. Unbeknownst to me as I razed it, Mackoti had - the previous turn - been the victim of the bug where you do actions in a PBEM and they don't take. In this case he had actually added three defenders to the city that turn (except that due to the bug, he "didn't".) If the turn had gotten to me with those defenders there, I would not have used or even revealed my army there, nor showed my intent to be aggressive.

So from Mackoti's perspective, he just lost his 3rd best (~) city, which he had expressly defended properly, due to a bug, and now his game is ruined by this ridiculous bug.

From my perspective, if we reload, I've lost an advantage I had which I treasured greatly, namely that my opponents don't know where I might be attacking and with what. And I didn't do anything to deserve this. The worst part would be having to play against an opponent who knows I attacked him, without me actually even getting to do the attack, heh.

Team Gaspar, NoShoot, Serdoa - please let me know what you would like to happen.

P.S. I did briefly talk to Novice before posting this btw, and he suggested asking Pling, the game admin. Pling - the problem is the bug just killed motivation for us. If we were angry at each other and needing mediation I would take it to you, but that's not the case and we are both just pissed at this bug, so getting a "fair" ruling wouldn't help.

Well I just razed one of novice's cities so goal met for me! Life fulfilled. I'm willing to end it here but since technically this is Gaspar's game it's up to him. But also he can't play because he doesn't have a computer so maybe it is up to me. Anyway he'd probably say yes let's end this.

Well, tbh I don't think keeping the game with one or both of you giving up is really making much sense, if one or the other would probably steamroll the sub. And if you have no motivation to keep going - what I can somewhat rely to because I probably would have searched for a sub in PBEM46 as well if we hadn't reloaded - it simply has to end here I guess. It is a pity because this game I played even better than PBEM32 (which I thought would be the best game I played ever) so of course I would have loved to see how mackoti still wins it.

Oh well. GG all around and thanks Gaspar for keeping on despite getting all the players you did not want to play against. smile
