What's the consensus on the smart ping feature? It sounds really cool... and it's another week until I'll be able to try it, so would welcome any initial thoughts.

Overall positive.
Most useful one I'm finding is the "I'm going HERE" ping, which can help direct ganks as well as guiding fleeing allies to possible counter attack locations. Said ping is very clear and creates a big green circle with your char name under it on the active map.
For example: blue side top, your top lane has overextended/possibly got caught too far and is currently being chased through the purple tribush by the enemy jungler. He has a choice of either going up, to try and reach his turret, or down the river. Ordinarily, most would choose the shorter safer route top, but if mid sees the situation and responds, can direct the top laner down the river to set up a nice turnaround. Done it several times already.

Finding a couple of pings a bit lacking in the sound department though, the "mia" and "need assistance" pings create icons on the minimap, but the sounds are nowhere near as distinctive as the old retreat/danger ping. Feels like you need to spam to get as much attention.
Using radial menu is also a little slow atm - requires three separate actions for each ping (V, left click, direction), not always something that's accessible in the heat of the moment. From what I understand, it's not entirely possible/appear to be problems with binding the new pings to specific keys .

Fnatic vs Copenhagen Wolves

Needed to bookmark this, so I figured I'd share it for those who missed it. Lots of great plays in a match that was "supposed" to be lopsided.

Does anybody know why there is no NA team participating at IEM 2013 in Hannover?

Only one NA team qualified. Qualification is based on a) being regional highest rank b) winning an IEM c) overall IEM season score (this is the IEM season finals, remember). The only NA team that qualifed was AL.na, and they don't exist anymore, I think.

The reason why NA teams rank so low in IEM events is because they either did not place well there or did not attend (TSM and CLG are notorious for this). Here are the standings for IEM season VII. An example of NA teams bailing is IEM Cologne .
Of course, with the IEM events being focused on Europe, and the Season 2 regionals being counted as an IEM event, this skews the picture a bit towards the European teams. Kinda like IPL and MLG always have more NA teams.

Thanks for the information. I don't think this system is very smart, a big part of the fun was that you had all these teams from different regions playing each other. Why not do it like other sports, where each region has a guaranteed number of seats (ie. two seats for NA/SA/EU/Asia/Russia)?
It's probably not easy generating a lot of interest in NA if you have no team from that region competing...

Not quite, according to Scarra the reason the larger teams don't go is cost. The reason the US teams don't bother going is because to breakeven on the plane tickets they need to come second. So they don't even bother trying to qualify. Previously they would have gone through the qualifiers to see what happens, but now there is LCS there is no point in that.

Yes and no. For the finals (i.e., this tournament), only AL.NA qualified (see the leaguepedia link I posted). Since they don't have an active roster anymore, their spot was given to the next best American team, pain gaming (Brazil), because the Americas have that guaranteed spot for the best of their region (only other Americas team with points is Curse with one last place).

However, the reason why the American (NA) teams are ranking so badly is because they don't attend the IEM events. And that is where cost kicks in, as Krill correctly states. Take IEM Cologne (the other link I posted), for example, where CLG.Na, dignitas, Fear, Team Dynamic and AL.NA did withdraw one after another (and TSM and Curse probably did not participate in the qualifiers). I know that CLG.NA bailed on economic grounds. So yes, there is a guaranteed spot for the American teams, but that requires the teams to actually participate in some IEM event. After Kiev and Season VI finals, the American teams (read: TSM) have given up on that, probably due to economic considerations. That was well before LCS by the way.

I do think though that Gustaran is correct in pointing out that, due to the LCS format, we don't see much inter-region tournaments anymore, and that this is quite sad.
