Why do you guys keep saying "take a [number]"? What does that mean?

To take 10 on a skill check is to do it calmly and unhurriedly, at your 'standard' level of ability for that skill. So, rather than risking rolling a low number, you can elect to just say that roll was a 10. Sure, you might miss out on getting an awesome result, but in most cases that wouldn't necessarily be a better result. You can only take 10 if you're not in a hurry, or under threat, or whatever other circumstances that would render you incapable of being methodical about it.
Taking 20 is effectively "I'm going to keep attempting to do whatever until I've manged to roll a natural 20 on it." Rules condenses it down somewhat, recommending a 'standard' time (of somewhat less than 20 attempts, if I recall correctly), but that's the basic gist.

I've been back since yesterday, but appear to've brought a cold home as a souvenir so my head's not back in the game yet. I've only skim read the game thread enough to know the orcs are dead & we are not Am I holding us up? If so, I'll make more of an effort to read it properly today.

No hold up, take your time. We promise to give your character back relatively unharmed and with most of her gear still intact.
Seriously, though, I don't think it's holding us up. Take your time to catch up and we take it from there. Like I've said before, I think we'll be missing a person or two for most of the game, due to various reasons, so proceeding without everyone's participation is to expected from time to time.

Glad I didn't sign up, never realised how slow this played out... I mean you guys are still playing out the first combat...

Well, I think we've technically finished the second encounter...

Me neither xD
Luckily I've been too busy lately to get much DnD angst tho.
but when I do ... its Dungeons and Dragons Online time! :D
Pretty sad about the missing arrow, but I suppose in the long run it is not that bad.
Still, thinking about switching to melee just for a *little* bit until I get better at this whole archery thing

It probably could go faster, if we were all around more often.

but that is the thing. I could just use my Sword ad infinitam, and not have to worry about maintenance, or fixing my sword, etc ... but here I just keep missing and missing ...
do you know how many arrows I buy for your average instance in DDO? 600. 600! and twice that many if I'm going to solo.
To be fair, with a large group I rarely use over 200.
In my opinion having 40 arrows is rediculously low ... but then again I guess I was thinking of a campaign rather than a skirmish. It will all depend on how often I can resupply I suppose.
Still, at a 75% recovery, that is strictly better than the 50% recovery of normal 'lost arrows'. And durable arrows have the amazing ability of 100% recovery from dead bodies, since its pretty obvious where they are (and they don't break).
I guess I'll have to wait and see how hard/easy it is to craft another durable arrow before deciding on whether to switch to my Falchion for awhile or not.
