Apolyton definitely has research visibility on us; the EP count is 98-3 in their favor. Based on looking at the numbers from other similar ratios in the game, I'm quite confident that they can see whatever we're researching. This means that various tricks to try and hide our research are not likely to be effective.
...unless you want me to play in scumbag Parkin style and do last-minute research swaps to throw them off. While this is a possibility, I would really like to avoid that. I just don't think that researching to 99% of completion on techs does anything to help us win. Either we out-research them to Liberalism, or we don't.

FYI ...
Quote:Graph visibility - round down [ round down (30 + 0.30 * opponent's EP against you) * EP Percentage]
Research visibility - round down [ round down (75 + 0.75 * opponent's EP against you) * EP Percentage]
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Note that that doesn't tell the EP percentage.

Our EP percentage is definitely lower than Apolyton's so it's safe to say that they need fewer than 76 EP for research visibility on us.

You can get our EP percentage against them (EP Screen) - something between 90% and 100% is what I would expect. Their EP percentage against us is the reciprocal.
Edit: Oops - SS is right - ours will be above 100% ... theirs will be below. Change my expectation of ours to 100% to 110%.

Seeing as we've produced minimal EP this game, our percentage is surely going to be above 100%. Theirs will be e.g. 90%.

That's a shame. So we could spend ~100 EPs against them (via slider) to make sure they lose visibility. Hardly worth it when doing so practically screams "we don't want you to see us research Liberalism".
I guess we'll just have to outresearch them then. But we might still surprise them, e.g. by bulbing Edu and completing Liberalism on the same turn. So something like:
Tech paper
Tech small part of Edu
Tech philo almost to completion while saving enough gold for 3 turns of max sci
Tech archery
Finish philo
Bulb rest of Edu and complete Lib with overflow from Philo and Archery.
I have to run.

The alternative is to simply go for researching Liberalism as quickly as we can, without trying to hide things.
Anyway, I think we should go for Philosophy before Paper. Right now, we get a 3% known tech bonus to Philosophy, and none to Paper. If Apolyton are gunning for Liberalism too, then we will deny them the known tech bonus to Paper that way.

wow - between the time i pressed "OK" and the time the server registered that I did so, someone else hopped in. so it was asking me for WPC's password even though Pacal was sitting there.
