Brick by Brick (Spoiler Alert!)

Whew, that was a long post! It took me all day to write. (And, er, it didn't end up being imageless.) Sorry about that. Obviously only read it if you're interested. I hope you will, though - post-mortems like that, in conjunction with the in-play narrative of course, are what I think make reporting threads (Sullla's, for example) so great.

By the way, I would be honoured if someone wrote a similar criticism of my own war-conduct in the lurker thread, either for this war or the one (presumably) coming with Azza or both. In fact, any criticisms of my play, negative or positive, will be welcome. But I will understand if no one does so; it's an involved process.

Anyway, here's the promised state-of-the-empire. Prepare for more images!

I'm aware my cities are smaller than they should be. War-weariness and drafting are responsible for that, and my abysmal population on the demographics screen below.

Still debating what to research next: the short route to cuirassiers (just Military Tradition) or the long route to riflemen (Alphabet - Printing Press - Replaceable Parts - Rifling).

After end-of-turn:

All the musketmen and macemen save one have been generated over the last four turns.

And with the completion of the Taj Mahal, my second Golden Age began (with half the first one still to go)!

Oh, almost forgot - I trust you've all heard the news from Old Harry. Caloo Calay! My New Model Army mobilized in case I decide to attempt to exploit the situation, even though it's not fully built-up yet. We'll see what the coming turns bring!

I think your analysis of the war was very sound, and that it was a very well timed and executed attack. I don't have time at the moment for in depth-comments, but congratulate you on current successes and look eagerly to see if you can turn that into a win here. popcorn

Why thank you, BRick.

Can you draft grenadiers if you haven't unlocked riflemen? I don't think so, but want to double-check. Also, I think that's what Azza's going for: I've been tracking his tech progress, and realized once he finishes Gunpowder grenadiers will only be one tech away for him. Looks like it's Military Tradition for cuirs as a counter for sure.

I'm pretty sure grenadiers are not draftable.

Grenadiers are that not draftable.

Thanks, guys. And I realized I'm stupid: grenadiers unlock at Military Science in BtS, not Chemistry.

Watched the Taj video. Serdoa did not take the peace, predictably, so I proposed a blank peace. At end of turn I got the Economics merchant and a scientist out of Wild West. For some reason my Golden Age is giving me +100% Great Person points. I didn't realize they did that, and I didn't notice it till this turn.

They do that since BTS.

Ah, excellent. You guys can probably tell I got BtS late in my single-player Civ IV experience.

Serdoa did not accept blank peace. Means I'll just have to wait for war-weariness to wear off. For now, keeping it down with military police. Maybe I'll go fight him again later to get experience for these units I've drafted and get another Great General (74/90).

Stopped drafting. Switched to economic builds. Teched Alphabet at 10% science to save gold for Printing Press (will be a big economic boost) -> Replaceable Parts -> Rifling by the end of my triple Golden Age. Azza can get to grenadiers (or presumably riflemen) in the same time-frame. I'll see if he goes for cuirassiers earlier and be able to counter. If he's content with musketmen or dawdles, I may be able to smash him with drafted rifles. If not I'll at least be able to counter whatever he does as we keep teching up. I do have a lead but it's not big enough to guarantee anything, especially with this blasted Golden Age he's in. If he pops a second, his double Golden Age will be as long as my triple due to his Mausoleum of Mausollus - unless Old Harry takes it from him. Speaking of which, I don't know what Old Harry's going to do yet since his army is sitting healing in the city he lost to Azza earlier. Azza doesn't have much right now with his 50-unit stack destroyed - Old Harry could take it from him. If he moves, I'll send my army in, hopefully united with my returning knights. Azza won't be able to stand up to both of us. But that would give the game to me, and I'm not sure Old Harry's willing to do that (though he'd probably rather me win than Azza, since I've never attacked him!). Here are the pictures; request any others you'd like:
