Our capital has a number-of-cities cost of 5.51g right now, so we're not at the cap yet. Seems city size also factors in there:
City | Size | # cities maintenance |
---|
Adventure One / Horse Feathers | 13 | 5.51 | Gourmet Menu | 12 | 5.32 | Mansa's Muse | 11 | 5.13 | Focal Point | 8 | 4.56 | Ditchdigger | 4 | 3.8 | Frozen Jungle | 2 | 3.42 | Let It Snow / Catherine | 1 | 3.42 |

I agree with this. I don't think it's worth spending all those turns working artists to enable a few farms. I would rather just work coast until workshops are an option.

If we want to hit 40 % defense bonus or get some extra vision before our NAPs end we can spend couple of turns working artists as you said.
I was going to suggest that as well. Chop into a granary, lighthouse, barracks, then draft. At size 6 with baracks we should be able to draft every 5 turns and not even need chain irrigation for some time... We can then slow build a theater. I don't feel very strongly about this but I think it's a viable alternative.
EDIT: Crosspost with Seven.

I agree with novice and kjn - I would grab the crabs+deer spot on the peninsula.
In terms of which cities to draft then I had one change: Drafting Horse Feathers should wait until next turn because to do so this turn would stop it growing this turn. Instead I would draft Seven Tribes because it drafts away the weakest tile.

What kind of force are we aiming for with regards to attacking Germania?
Edit: I mean numbers of troops. That might affect which cities you want to draft this turn, to be able to get a second round of maces that can reach the front in time for a t150 attack

Wait, what? What kind of mid-sized cities do you have that produce 72 gpt??

I agree with this - either whip Seven Tribes or Gourmet Menu this turn.
Edit: Also, I would run 0% science for 2 more turns because at the moment we have no cities that want to build elephants. BbB and Horse Feathers have 2 turns to go on their forges.

Helps to secure that large bay with Starfall and two food resources, so it can at least do something. The spot SE-SE of the fur is a junk filler spot. Worth settling sometime, but never a priority.
I'm pretty sure Sullla meant SE-S of fur and not SE-SE. Anyway I agree that the next city should be 3W of our galley. In addition to its strategic location it has two forests and two dedicated food resources.
I'm pretty sure Sulla meant 2SW of the fur, getting the other deer. Maybe we'll stop getting confused if we ever get east and west correct...
Anyway, I agree that we should claim the deer + crab spot south of Catherine, planting 1W of the deer to grab both food.

Hmm 2SW also can't share the fur - I vote for SW-S as what he really meant
