[SPOILERS] Lurkerloos and map discussion

What you intend to do and what happens can be totally different, but it can still fuck over someone else. Perhaps I come form the school of thought that players shouldn't role play the in game decisions beyond the "he annoyed me earlier so time to go piss in his cheerios", but actively encouraging a player to go and dick about is unconscionable to me and others.

To be totally honest as a player on these fora I don't trust the lurkers to act appropriately if what you and T-hawk said is going to be the status quo. I think once this game is over we need to discuss this issue. I'm not actually happy playing a game if you or others are going to do this in other spoiler threads, and I know several other players feel the same. In the past it's been agreed that heavy handed moderation isn't the right choice, and I fully agree with that view, but it relies on trust and tbh that's lacking now.

For what it's worth, if the situation presented itself again, since I am a global lurker at this point, while in the context it wasn't harmful, because I have the extra knowledge that could theoretically be an influence on what I say or not. I don't think this instance in particular was or would cause any harm by changing anybody's actions, the problem is precedent and inching back towards lurkers being more loose with their tongues then they should be.

Maybe it would help if we commit to having a set of statements for what overall is expected from players/global lurkers/ded lurkers?

I don't take the same liberties with other players. Only those who I know. You can dig around the forum if you'd like, or you can take me at my word. Regardless, I only push for lurker blood to this extent in Xenu's thread, based solely on the fact that I know him. For my entire life I know him, not I just started following a game on some internet site a year ago. He is going to do what he wants to do, regardless of what I or any other lurker says. Trust that you are not the only person that knows what is appropriate for a given set of circumstances.

Now, who has been "fucked over" by which lurker comment? If you insist on dragging this bullshit out, be specific. Or, be done with it and cry in another thread. Fucking fun police.

It's not about who is fucked over, it's about who can be fucked over. In this case, If Xenu were to go to war with Zulu that would open up him up to a potential invasion from Serdoa and/or Plako, and it could also make it significantly cheaper (or dare I say it even possible) for Commodore to win that war. All of which wouldn't be the same if Xenu decided to sit back in peace and be a thorn in Serdoa's side. As it is Plako hasn't actually won the game yet: even though Bigger ought to have difficulty, he is still a problem with the CV. This still leaves open the possibility that Something unexpected happens.

Also, fuck you if you think these games are run just for your personally enjoyment. You are a lurker, you aren't entitled to shit.

I generally have considered the posts baying for blood in all games as expected and harmless.

I also generally think that the better the player, the more sensitive one is to those outside influences, since the lurker-geist is generally in favor tightening the game.

As I've gotten better, I've gotten more sensitive to things I once found harmless. And I'm still not very good. I can't imagine what someone like Seven feels.

That all said, we might run these games for the players, but we run the forums for the community and I do think eventually you have to be careful that you're ruining all the fun.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

that's an interesting point Gaspar. I have had the same experience, and I've gotten a lot more careful in spoiler threads.

that's all, I'll get out of the way of the shooting match now.

That's probably the reason why I don't mind those comments. mischief

I just always assumed that such comments were in jest and traditionally ignored by the player. However, I don't think that I've ever posted such a comment.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
